BASEBALL CAP The New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club, often acknowledged as the sport’s first organised team, introduced the baseball uniform in 1849: blue wool pantaloons, a white flannel shirt and a broad-brimmed straw hat. The hat had nothing particularly to do with the fight against glare, and the world had not yet brought ‘branding’ upon itself. Around 1858, the Brooklyn Excelsiors introduced the progenitor of the modern baseball cap, with its round crown and brief brim indebted to the jockey’s headgear. Soon Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago articulated their own takes on the form.
