MCT says, “Benefits to the vessel are that the subcontractors can work in a stable air conditioned environment. Crew can have a normal environment to work in, galley can stay operational without having to find freezer storage ashore and engineers can flush their systems with chemicals to be ready for their seasons or crossings.”
With the UK leaving the EU we asked refit yards for their thoughts on what might happen to local business in Spain asking will the refit business be affected? Only two companies had an opinion they were willing to share.
Brendon Jost told us, “I think that the whole of Europe will be affected by the
UK leaving the EU. To what extent I don’t know, I am not an economist but the filter down effect is going to affect everyone in one way or the other. In yachting hubs such as Palma, there is a massive part of the community and workforce that replies on this industry. Financially, how it is going to affect the vessels registered in the UK, I guess that’s just another problem that they will need to solve, but I do know it will seriously affect a lot of expats who still want to live in Spain but remain with a UK passport. It’s going to be very interesting and by no means easy. Harder than I think anybody actually thought.”
MB92 believe it is still, even as we approach the scheduled leaving date, unclear how the UK leaving the EU will affect a host of industries, including Spain. They say, “There are a number of issues ranging from customs and visas through to tax and tariffs that are still to be resolved. This will be a period of transition and uncertainty for the entire European community to face and one that we will adapt to and work hard to be prepared for. We are confident that Spain, as a traditional hotspot for the yachting industry, will remain so and, as in all periods of unrest, provide new opportunities into the future.”
