Be prepared to keep pumping

W

ith flooding and storms now an annual occurrence in the UK, the need to

have an emergency flood plan is becoming a necessity for households and businesses nationwide.

The Environment Agency estimates that one in four households are at risk from floods and 2.8 million homes are currently vulnerable to surface water flooding. As well as prevention planning to help mitigate some of the risk, homeowners, business owners and site project managers should have a clear disaster plan in place to deal with emergencies in the quickest way possible, which is where the hire industry plays such an important role in the plans by providing a fast response service and having equipment readily available when called upon.

Some of the recommended planning includes checking if the property is in a flood risk area, signing up for free flood warnings, creating and practicing a plan to defend the property, storing documents such as insurance and emergency contacts away from potential flood levels, having torches and batteries on hand.

If it’s known the property is at risk, various flood defence products such as flood barriers can be installed to help prevent water entering the building. Simple and effective products that Obart offers include Hydrosacks and Hydrosnakes, which is an innovative sandless sand bag, as well as Obart’s own range of Floodmate emergency pumping kits, comprising of four options in a self-contained storage box can all be pre- purchased as preventative measures.

However, if water has breached the defences and needs urgently removing, most hire companies core fleet range of 1 phase and engine pumps will tackle water removal and assist prior to the post flood clean up tasks.

As pump specialists, we help customers plan their fleet requirements, making sure the right products are available when needed to tackle these devastating events, and supplying the best pump products that can be relied on in the most demanding environments. This is particularly important for hire companies, as poor quality pumps can fail, resulting in severe consequences when delays in pumping occur.

We often receive comments, such as: “It’s just a sub pump”, “There’s not much to it really” and “They all look the same.” We agree, they do look the same, and customers just want it to pump away the water quickly. However, there’s a lot more going on inside which makes the difference

Each Hydrosack can absorb up to 20 litres of water.

In spite of any cosmetic similarities, sub pumps are not all created equally – so how can you tell the difference? Pete Mcmutrie from Obart explains…

between a reliable pump and one that looks like a reliable pump, but isn’t.

So what’s going on inside a Tsurumi pump and why is it important? Here are just a few key features: Tsurumi-developed oil lifter technology, which lubricates the mechanical seal while the pump works at any angle, thus prolonging its life; quick-change cable replacement, which can easily be completed in under a minute; anti-wicking cable entry that prevents water ingress damaging the motor; a high grade motor that withstands long periods of dry running (tested under laboratory conditions); a double mechanical seal offering 5 x higher corrosion resistance; a urethane rubber impeller that lasts 3 x longer than cast iron; easy maintenance – a 13mm spanner allows quick access to the pump chamber and impeller in under a minute; and full parts service, with UK spares available off the shelf for a quick turnaround. All Tsurumi pumps are backed by a three-year warranty, enabling users and hire companies to buy with confidence.

When we consider the serious threats of floods and storms, and the devastating effects it can have on people’s lives, its hopefully reassuring to know that every thought has gone into a pump designed to keep on working when it is needed the most! n
