Hotels invest in energy-saving tech
The introduction of green energy technology is helping two of Cornwall’s leading hotels to cut back on their consumption and improve their environmental performance.
BEDRUTHAN Steps Hotel in Mawgan Porth near Newquay is a four star family friendly hotel owned by Red Hotels, which also owns the adjacent Scarlett Hotel. Red Hotels are known for their award winning environmental performance. Bedruthan Steps Hotel started working
with ZLC Energy in 2015 when the company installed 90kWp of Solar PV across the hotel and staff quarter roofs. Solar PV was selected to match the hotel’s energy demand and to make use of the site’s clear roofspace where installations wouldn’t impact on the aesthetics of the buildings. Bedruthan’s Solar Array generates
90,000kWh per year, nearly all of which is used on site, with a payback of five years and a saving of 40 tonnes of CO2/ year. ZLC Energy worked on the installation
live, as the hotel was full. This involved strict control over the timing of works to avoid disturbing guests. The installation was completed during difficult weather conditions, exacerbated by the hotel’s exposed

location, but was successfully achieved thanks to the careful sequence of work and the employment of appropriate plant. ZLC Energy is also working with Merchants
Manor, a luxury country house hotel and spa in the heart of Falmouth and owned by Nick & Sioned Rudlin. For the past four years, Nick & Sioned have been refurbishing and improving the old building to a high standard and environmental performance. In 2017, ZLC renewed the heating system
throughout Merchants Manor, installing a Combined Heat & Power (CHP) unit to efficiently heat and power the 100-year old hotel. Given the age and style of the building, CHP was specified as the best solution for the project - solar panels wouldn’t have been as aesthetically pleasing for the hotel. CHP also offered a very strong return on investment due to the continuous year round occupancy and associated constant baseline heating and power loads. Merchants Manor CHP generates
70,000kWh of electricity and 140,000kWh of
heat, all of which is used on site with a payback of five years and representing a saving of 30 tonnes of C02/year. ZLC Energy has also installed a
pressurised water system throughout the hotel and extended the heating system to include new self-catering units on site. The hotel has recently become the
first in the UK to join a global project aiming to create a ‘sustainable future for us all’ organised by the NOW Force for Good Alliance. “The team at Merchants Manor has done
a great job of making sustainability a priority, while boosting business performance and we’re proud to have played a part in helping them do that,” says Matthew Shepherd, managing director at ZLC Energy. The company continues to provide
ongoing maintenance and support to both hotels and is working with them to evaluate their next best green energy investment.
