The Big Interview It’s genuinely recycled

Jackets, fleece, beanies and more, form the foundation of Result Clothing’s new Genuine Recycled range. David Sanders-Smith, managing director, discusses the ins and outs of this exciting new venture with P&P editor, Melanie Attlesey.

roving that good things come to those who wait, Result Clothing has spent the past few years watching and waiting for yarns made from recycled PET (or to put it simply recycled plastic) to have enough integral strength for outerwear. Now that time has come and the resulting factor for Result Clothing is a new exciting collection called Genuine Recycled, where every garment in the range is made from as close to 100% recycled materials as possible and every hat in the range is made from around 50% recycled materials. “Prior to the development of Genuine Recycled, we estimated that around 20% of our range contained some form of recycling, whether it’s the recycling of water in the dyeing process or the fibres that are used in the garments. The improved recycling methods of PET means the yarns are now stronger and moreover, they have got a nice soft handle to them, which again was an issue in the past. This has really transformed the quality of the products so, when you touch the jackets and fleece in our range, they feel like luxury products. It’s a real transformation and very encouraging for the future,” says David.

Care and attention

On flicking through the new brochure for the collection, which is due out next month, you will notice that some of the products use Repreve, while others use TopGreen and perPETual. Repreve denotes that the polyester insulation fibres used are made from recycled materials, while TopGreen and perPETual assures that the outer fabrics have been made from sustainable yarns using recycled materials, and that all are certified by the Global Recycled Standard. Care and attention has been paid to every little detail on each product, even down to the YKK Natulon eco-friendly zips used on some of the jackets and the quality of the topstitching throughout. For the vast majority of the range David says the only thing that is not 100% recycled is

the sewing thread, which means he can say with some confidence that the garments are made from 99.5% recycled materials.

Even the cardboard packaging, labels and removeable hangtags are made from recycled materials, with the plastic bags each garment is packed into being biodegradable. And, as much of the range itself can be recycled after use, its closed loop sustainability will appeal to firms who practice, or want to increase their, Corporate Social Responsibility.

We’ve all got to do our bit to act responsibly and it’s down to Result and other brands to make these products available.

— David Sanders-Smith, managing director, Result Clothing

A feelgood factor So far, David estimates that product already manufactured for the current collection has saved the equivalent of 3.5 million one litre PET bottles from going to landfill. It is hoped that this figure will double in 2021 and double again the year after. “We sell two million knitted hats a year, so if we can manufacture all of our hats from 50% recycled PET, we will be saving the equivalent of another two million bottles from landfill,” he adds.

Handy pictograms inside the new brochure for the collection, illustrate

just how many recycled PET bottles it takes to make one product. This simplified way of illustrating the process allows the wearer to appreciate the recycling process and provides a feelgood factor. Take the Recycled Fleece Polarthermic Jacket (R903X), which just so happens to be David’s favourite item from the extensive collection. It takes the equivalent of 35 recycled one litre PET bottles to make one fleece, which is a lot of plastic waste saved from landfill.

“The R903X has got such a plush, luxurious feel to it. In my opinion it’s the best fleece we have ever made. It costs £9.50, whereas a 280g fleece made from standard yarn will cost around £8.50. That extra pound gets you real value. You won’t even look at any other fleece after feeling this one. It’s a winner,” he says. Speaking of price, this is often a real sticking point when it comes to recycled garments, with some often commanding a substantially higher price tag. But not in this case.
