Chadwick Textiles renews partnership with Raleigh International

Volunteers in Tanzania C

hadwick Textiles has renewed its partnership with Raleigh International for a further three years. During the previous partnership from 2018 to 2020 much was achieved. The partnership supported young Tanzanians to plant 360,000 trees, build three community-owned tree nurseries, train young people as Natural Resource Management facilitators and educate over 1,100 community members about sustainable forest management. The new three-year partnership will help create a new generation of young leaders to take action and fight the climate crisis in Tanzania and the UK. Continuing the fight against deforestation in Tanzania, Chadwick Textiles will support young people to mobilise others to use clean energy sources and plant 130,000 trees by 2024.

Furlough scheme comes to close

T

he government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, which began in spring 2020, came to a close on

September 30.

The government initially paid 80% of the wages of people who couldn’t work or whose employers could no longer afford to pay them – up to £2,500 a month. This dropped to 70% with employers required to pay 10% of salaries in July and dropped to 60% in August and September. Many forecasters, including the Bank of England, expected a small rise in unemployment after furlough ended. The most recent figures show that 1.6 million people were still on furlough at the end of July. This was the lowest level since the start of the pandemic and 340,000 fewer than a month earlier.

For those that have lost their job since the end of furlough, the good news is that the number of vacancies is at a record high. The government estimates that 11.6 million jobs have been supported since the scheme began. However, in doing so the scheme has cost £66 billion, according to the Office for Budget Responsibility.

While in the UK, its support will create 35 Access Fund places for Re:Green, the new UK programme, which will provide financial support to eligible applicants so that young people from a wide range of background can take part and become young leaders for the environment. The Chadwick team will also undertake personal environmental action this year, taking on the Tree Planting Action Challenge. The team will join the wider Raleigh community in planting over 7,000 trees across the UK to raise awareness about the importance of tree-planting and the global need to improve tree cover. Managing director of Chadwick Textiles, Joel Chadwick, said: “Chadwick textiles are once again delighted to partner and sponsor Raleigh international for a further three years. Building on the urgent and valuable work they and their dedicated volunteers have committed to

in Mufindi, Tanzania (something I was fortunate enough to have witnessed for myself first-hand). We are equally excited by the new challenge the Re-Green project presents as it’s starting to take shape here on our doorstep in the UK. We sincerely hope that our continued support for Raleigh will further highlight the vital work they do on all our behalf’s given the global climate emergency we can’t ignore.” Projects funded by Chadwick Textiles commenced in June 2021 and continue until June 2024.

Alexandra and RCN team up to get nurses’ uniform design views

N

urses across the country have given their views on uniform design in a joint survey by the Royal College of

Nursing and Alexandra.

Over 1,300 nurses and allied health professionals took part in the questionnaire which focused on the functionality and wearability needs of nurses working in a wide range of healthcare settings. Charlotte Auger, lead technical designer at Alexandra, said: “As a design team we are so pleased with the level of engagement received from the RCN community which has given us a greater understanding of how hard working the nurses uniform has to be. “Nursing is a physically and emotionally demanding profession and all nurses deserve a uniform that really meets their everyday needs. Working in partnership in this way we are able to really understand the day-to-day restraints of the medical working environment that will help to inform and engineer the future of our design and products.” A group of nurses taking part in the joint survey have also agreed to provide uniform insights on an ongoing basis with Alexandra through a dedicated design focus group.

The joint RCN and Alexandra survey comes in the wake of a national debate over whether the NHS in England should follow Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and adopt a standardised, national nursing uniform.

In April, NHS Supply Chain launched a seven-week consultation into whether a national approach to uniforms should be adopted. Initial results suggest overwhelming support for the move.
