FESPA Preview
As an extension of our Sustainability Spotlight feature, and with the aim of maximising access to sustainability guidance, also going live in May, is an online hub on
fespa.com where we will share insight into how to make businesses and print processes more environmentally friendly. As part of the hub, we’re introducing a new, on-demand video series with Richardson-Locke, technical lead at FESPA, in conversation with suppliers, print service providers and sustainability experts. Visitors can also expect to see a stream of sustainability content played on a screen in the Sustainability Spotlight feature.
Over 500 suppliers will showcase the latest innovations in technology across five halls at Messe Munich
Q. What do you think will be the highlights of this year’s exhibition? A. The popular Sustainability Spotlight material showcase is back, highlighting sustainably produced applications to help printers make more environmentally conscious choices. Visitors will be able to see and touch an array of applications, substrates and textiles, and read information cards with further detail about the sustainable attributes of the material. Sustainability remains a key driver in the garment decorating industry and delegates are set to gain insights into more planet- friendly substrates and applications. A personal highlight for me is the FESPA Awards showcase. We’ve received over 210 submissions from 34 countries which have been judged by a panel of independent experts and, as always, we have been blown away by the work that goes into each entry and the talent displayed.
For the first time since 2019, visitors will be able to explore the shortlisted FESPA Awards 2023 entries in the West Entrance of the Messe Munich. We’ve got multiple Awards categories specifically for textiles and garment manufacturing so I would definitely encourage you to stop by and take a look. We will also be celebrating the winners in a VIP ceremony on Wednesday, May 24.
Q. Are there any stand out exhibitors that our readers should pay a visit to? Do you know if there is any new equipment

launching at this year’s exhibition that would be of interest to garment decorators? A. With an array of exhibitors involved in textile and garment printing including Brother, Epson, Roland, Roq, Mimaki, Polyprint, Siser and INO, there will be a host of technology and applications, and must-see stands for visitors to explore. As always, FESPA Global Print Expo 2023 will be a key launch platform and many exhibitors are already signalling that they’re planning to unveil new solutions, as well as showcase products in a live setting for the first time.
Q. Are there any seminars or talks that our readers can attend to enhance their businesses? A. While we don’t have a conference programme outside of the new Personalisation Experience at the show this year, we have vast content-led resources on the textile market available on
fespa.com.
This month, we’re launching a Printeriors online hub, which will provide an ‘always- on’ resource, building out the application stories for the products that have been created in previous iterations of the physical Printeriors showcase. The hub will consist of mini case studies, detailing the production methods, technologies and substrates used, as well as providing a central platform hosting articles, videos and podcasts on the interior décor opportunity and how printers can expand into this market.
Q. How would you describe the garment decoration industry in the UK in the current cost of living crisis? A. Although the industry has gone from strength to strength in the past year, garment decorators are still faced with challenges such as rising energy and labour costs and persisting supply chain issues. As a result, we’re seeing a shift to streamlined and automated processes to save energy and resources, as well as reduce waste. Software further accelerates production timescales in the custom garment sector, while automation simplifies the complicated tasks associated with customised garment production. DTG-printed team logos, numbers, colours and variable data, for example, are now added seamlessly, without human intervention, using smart technologies for global fulfilment. Automation solutions will be visible in all halls of the exhibition from software providers as well as hardware manufacturers demonstrating how to streamline job onboarding and production processes.
Rising customer demand for more sustainable fashion is also escalating in 2023 and feedback from our community is that consumers are looking for more environmentally-conscious products that are manufactured using sustainably sourced materials and energy-efficient production methods.
