Better Cotton launches new 2030 Impact Targets

B

etter Cotton has announced four new Impact Targets covering Soil Health, Women’s

Empowerment, Pesticides, and Sustainable Livelihoods. These new metrics form part of its ongoing 2030 Strategy and detail plans to galvanise change at the field level in key areas.

The four targets were developed in conjunction with leading civil organisations and industry experts, and they are: • Sustainable Livelihoods: Sustainably increase the net income and resilience of two million cotton farmers and workers.

• Soil Health: Ensure 100% of Better Cotton farmers have improved the health of their soil.

• Women’s Empowerment: Reach one million women in cotton with programmes and resources that promote equal farm decision-making, build climate resilience, or support

improved livelihoods. And ensure 25% of field staff are women with the power to influence sustainable cotton production.

• Pesticides: Reduce the use and risk of synthetic pesticides applied by Better Cotton farmers and workers by at least 50%.

Alan McClay, CEO of Better Cotton,

said: “Driving impact at the field-level is imperative for Better Cotton’s ambitions in what is a defining decade for our planet. Our new Impact Targets will allow us to continue taking measurable steps to support more sustainable cotton

Kingly successful in obtaining Oeko-Tex Standard 100 for upcycled socks

K

ingly has been granted an Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificate for its

upcycled socks.

Having a label with the trademark on these products simply means these are textiles tested for harmful substances. And now Kingly has accreditation not just through its suppliers but within the

company itself. The company can now guarantee that its products are safe even to the touch of a baby’s skin. Kingly’s award-winning upcycled socks are composed of 85% upcycled cotton for comfort, 12% recycled polyamide for strength, 3% elastane for comfort and strength.

products with a sustainability calculator. Kingly has discovered that 25,075,314 litres of water have been saved with 48 orders of Kingly upcycled socks in 2022. Moreover, 93,592 kW/h of energy have been saved, the carbon footprint has been minimized by 38,397 kg, and Kingly has prevented 4,235sq m from turning into

landfill. And this does not even include the orders combining upcycled and euro cotton or upcycled and GOTS organic cotton. For example, an IT giant managed to preserve 24 million litres of water with a single order of 34,000 upcycled cotton socks. By producing these sustainable products Kingly has reduced energy consumption by 90,168 kWh of electricity and avoided the use of 1,826kg of pollutants.

production. Pushing further towards regenerative and climate-smart agriculture, we can ensure cotton farmers and farm workers are equipped to address their environmental impact, futureproof their operations and adapt to the often unpredictable effects of global warming.

“Better Cotton continues to train an ever-growing global community on more sustainable farming practices. The Impact Targets will improve conditions across more than just cotton production, reaching beyond farming communities to benefit their landscapes, supply chains and ultimately consumers.”

This news comes as Better Cotton strengthens its ties with Tajikistan to support the production of more sustainable cotton in the nation, and trials innovative traceability solutions in India to determine the best way to establish greater transparency across cotton supply chains.

Kingly partners up with social enterprises

Kingly has partnered with Low Carb Factory and Labour Therapy to help in the folding of its FSC-certified boxes. Both social companies are focused on developing good practices regarding supported employment, labour rehabilitation and the integration of people with various mental or physical challenges. They provide those people with the opportunity to work and be productive members of society, and they educate businesses on the added value that such enterprises can provide for their supply chain.

Kingly has provided both enterprises with the opportunity to help in the folding its FSC-certified boxes. These not only help with preserving forests and illuminating illegal deforestation but also make sure your goods come in one piece. Two projects have been executed already. The result is a total of 4,500 folded boxes.
