Spotlighting sustainability in the garment industry

The FESPA Global Expo returns to Berlin later this month for four days of wide format digital, screen, textile print and signage fun. In this article, Michael Ryan, head of the FESPA Global Print Expo, shines a spotlight on sustainability in the garment industry – a major focus of the exhibition this year.

T

he growing demand for more sustainable practices in the textile industry has accelerated in recent years, with increased pressure from brands and consumers for more robust environmental credentials. As a result, to future-proof their businesses, textile printers and garment producers are having to rethink their production and switch to more eco-friendly technologies and consumables, as well as reduce waste and reuse/ recycle materials. In the garment industry emphasis is also being placed on transparency, particularly as there are often accusations of greenwashing and negative press surrounding fast-fashion business models. We’re therefore witnessing adapting supply chains and changes such as the rise in near-shoring, for example. As a result of the pandemic and geopolitical situation, businesses are experiencing delays in the supply chain and the availability of raw materials. Therefore, many providers are sourcing and producing their materials locally which not only reduces time to market but also signifi cantly decreases carbon footprints.

The steps to becoming a more sustainable business, also come with unique challenges. As every businesses’ needs are different, it’s hard to defi ne a roadmap or ‘fi t-for-all’ solution. It’s therefore necessary, to take a holistic approach to maximise your production, as well as constantly reviewing the latest trends in the market. Textile providers and printers have to be cautious of environmental claims and not only focus on production effi ciency and reducing waste but also scrutinise quality, performance and longevity to elongate the lifecycle of a product.

The shift to environmentally conscious practices is also aided by digital technologies and on-demand production, allowing textile printers to reduce waste and cut carbon emissions. Many suppliers are aware of the urgent demand for change in the market and, as a result, there have been huge developments in digital textile printing, enabling printers and garment producers to improve their processes and make production greener.
