Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is as Fast as Speeding Light
Susan Storey reports back on EPCOT’s stunning, creative new ride that is already wowing park visitors
A
s parks around the world add new coasters and rides, superlatives like, “tallest,” “fastest,” and “biggest” are
typically used to excite and inspire guests. While those words certainly do apply, there is no denying the first word that comes to mind after riding the brand-new Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT at Walt Disney World is – FUN! Located in EPCOT’s newly re-imagined World
Discovery area, Cosmic Rewind truly is a portal to an entire new galaxy of theme park experiences. “Six years in the making, the debut of Guardians
of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is the culmination of our entire team’s time, passion and energy ensuring the experience is everything it needs to
be,” shared Rachel Lamdin, Area Development Lead, Walt Disney Imagineering. “It is so exciting to finally have guests on it, and to see and hear their reactions as they return to earth. That, added with watching them immediately plan to ride again is everything we have worked so hard for.”
SIZE MATTERS In space, size matters and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is the longest fully enclosed coaster in any Disney theme park and one of the longest enclosed coasters in the world. The attraction covers more than 200,000 square feet, with its main show building stretching longer than an American football field. This massive
structure’s foundation contains more than 80 miles of rebar and 9,000-plus cubic yards of concrete. Serving as a welcome to all guests, a Starblaster
ship, parked outside the attraction’s entrance, is the perfect place to pose for first photos. It is also the first full-size version of a Xandarian ship ever built. Fans of the first film will recognize it as the type of ship used defend Xandar from Ronan the Accuser's Dark Aster. Once inside EPCOT’s first “other-world”
showcase pavilion, the Wonders of Xandar, guests queue through three main sections to learn about the planet Xandar, and why they are now part of EPCOT’s pavilion collection. (Hint – Star-Lord, well, Peter Quill had something to do with it.)
