just be presented with a product from a page in a catalogue; rather, they’ll receive invaluable knowledge and expertise in shaping their vision into a bespoke, real-world solution. In the case of the new Southend Pier trains,
Southend-on-Sea City Council sought public opinion on three different design options and three colourways. The most popular of each were combined to create the final design; from renderings to rails, Severn Lamb has brought Southend Pier’s trains into the 21st century. With automated doors, programmable LED
illumination, USB charging sockets, GPS audio and visual multimedia experiences, plus state-of-the-art remote diagnostic systems, the two trains boast features which - while commonplace on the UK’s mainline railway trains - are a first for trains of this size and scale.
Keeping it clean Severn Lamb is continuously developing its product range, in particular its powertrain systems. Since the business moved away from conventional steam locomotives to diesel hydraulic variants, each rendition became more efficient and eco-friendly, in line with Euro 5 and Euro 6 emissions standards. As new technologies have become available,
Severn Lamb’s clients have come knocking on the factory door for non-fossil fuel alternatives, and the past decade has seen Severn Lamb perfecting its Battery Electric drive system. Nearly all of Severn Lamb’s current projects feature a ‘clean engine’ power solution, as more and more clients seek sustainable visitor transportation solutions.
New tech meets old world telescopic cabins Severn Lamb’s most recently completed project demonstrates the adaptability of the company’s Battery Electric train design. As with the Southend Pier contract, the client wanted a low carbon powertrain alternative, but they were after something that was visually very different from the ultra-modern trains of the Southend Pier project. The client - leading real estate development firm
Qetaifan Projects - wanted visitors to Qetaifan Island North waterpark, Qatar, to experience a journey on trains uniquely themed to resemble 1950s oil tankers and trailers. Severn Lamb created a rustic, era-appropriate
design featuring weathered patina, working with the client at each stage of the project to ensure an end result that went well beyond their expectations. The project presented a challenge not just when
it came to design demands, but also scale. This is the largest locomotive and carriage combination to be powered by Severn Lamb’s Battery Electric drive system. The two trains will transport guests around

the park, with one servicing a looped track and stopping at destinations on the mainland, and the other train providing a passenger shuttle service which takes visitors to and from the waterpark island, which is only accessible via train. As climate change progresses and the attractions
industry comes under mounting pressure to become carbon neutral, it is battery electric and clean
engine solutions such as those used in Severn Lamb’s Southend Pier and Qetaifan Island projects which are going to help the sector stay on track towards a more sustainable future. With this future in mind, Severn Lamb has recently
added hydrogen and bio-methane battery vehicles to its portfolio, alongside its existing combustion and battery vehicle offerings.
