Product Magic: The explosion of turning material goods into attractions


Dr. Jack Samuels explains the trend he calls “Product Magic” and leads us through a few of his favourite examples.


F


or those who have been following my more than 250 management and marketing articles, mostly in the pages of this magazine, you would know that from time to time, I write about growing trends in the attraction industry. My last foray into this was when I wrote about my interest in  characterize the many new attractions that take the   wheels, and the various clear glass viewing installed in various places around the globe.  it in this foray, has exploded as an attraction trend. Possibly the later day fathers of this trend are food and beverage companies, that have often made attractions out of their products. Many of these

are factory tours with add-on company histories or  here is a categorical sampling: 1. Alcoholic beverage companies such as Heineken and the Bols liqueur are  distillery and the numerous wineries that have made their vineyards into attractions are other notable examples. It is an outstanding example in this category if you have never visited the Bols attraction, located virtually across the street from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. If you're not familiar with Bols, they make over 100 different flavoured liqueurs and a unique gin and are famous for their bottles, which  to get pretty drunk during this experience. It


probably enhances your ability to dump your wallet when you go through the gift shop.

Ice cream is big in this category, including the Ben and   Hill tour lets you eat as much ice cream as possible, so come hungry. Pennsylvania is so big on ice cream that there is a Pennsylvania   Scooped features an enjoyable, interactive activity, which I will discuss later in the article. Perhaps the granddaddy in this category is Hershey Foods and Hershey, Pennsylvania.
