MARKET REPORT: ASIA PACIFIC

Re-opening of theme parks in Asia All theme parks in Asia are making plans to re-open to the public. Governments and industry associations are actively working behind the scenes to reopen. Shanghai Disney reopened in May 2020 with a capacity limit of 30% of design capacity and extensive safety and cleanliness standards. A lower ticket price was offered during the reopening period. Tickets for the first day of reopening sold out in minutes as fans eagerly awaited the opportunity to visit the park again. Guests were greeted to a warm reception with minimal lines and crowding. One happy guest was quoted as saying “We are the envy of the world.” Other theme parks in China including those operated by Chimelong and OCT

have re-opened, often with capacity limits. The parks are implementing a number of safety and cleanliness standards as listed below. • Reducing overall park capacity with advance ticket sales

• Taking body temperature before entering

• Requiring guests to wear face masks at all times

• All staff are also required to wear face masks at all times.

• Enhanced cleaning in all guest areas • Social distancing in the park particularly ride queues

• Reduced capacity of some attractions • Closure of some attractions that have high touch such as play areas • Most parades are cancelled.

In China, a Health QR Code system

was established in 200 cities using Alipay and Wechat platforms. Upon request, a persons’ smartphone will generate a QR code and also check if the owner is supposed to be in quarantine or not. Before entry, all guests must show a green color QR code. Theme parks in Japan are adding the

requirement of “no screaming” when on a roller coaster. It's unclear how this will be enforced. The duration of park closures or

tentative re-opening is unknown and park operators are hopeful as summer months come, the virus threat will subside. Nonetheless we can expect enhanced protection measures to become the norm for theme parks in the future.
