ast July, Walibi Belgium had one of the darkest days in its history when torrential rains swept through the region, causing major floods. The park was severely affected by this natural disaster, with most of its infrastructures damaged, including many rides. Fortunately, no one was hurt. But as if the COVID-19 pandemic hadn’t been enough, the summer season was over in just a blink...

I was sad for the staff, considering the special place this park has in my heart. Til I left the family nest, Walibi was indeed my ‘‘home park’’ as I was living just half an hour from Wavre. This is where I rode my first looping coaster, my first flume ride or my first freefall tower, among others. I even worked there as a student, and took my very first steps in the attractions industry by covering the park’s news back at the beginning of the 2000’s. Walibi Belgium is a sacred monster in the European amusement industry, with a rich 46-years history which led to many innovations and iconic rides throughout the years. 2021 made no exception with the opening of the adrenaline-filled ‘airtime machine’ Kondaa, a megacoaster that literaly blew me away. If I was 18, I would have rode it the all day, but I’m aging so two rides were just fine for me, no more. Anyway, it ended with a delicious Belgian waffle, my favourite treat when I’m visiting Walibi !

During my visit a few weeks before the floods, I also met the brand new mascot, which has changed look once again. It reminded me of the time when Six Flags had replaced him with Bugs Bunny and friends, a move that hadn’t worked at all. Of course, the Belgians are too attached to their yellow kangoroo. Just like me, indeed!
