Waterparks

Water World, Cowabunga Beach - ADG

Making Waves A

ccording to Aquatic Development Group (ADG), designing a great waterpark today is about addressing the overall guest experience, which means a guest’s time spent in-water as well as out-of- water. “You want to make sure you have the right mix of what we like to refer to as “chills & thrills” – you definitely want to deliver on the thrills from the attractions and include the right mix of slides, places to get in the water without lines like wave pools and rivers, fun rides for kids as well as teens; but you also want enough places for guests to comfortably put down their bags and towels, escape into the shade, grab a bite to eat, even to sit and watch their young kids playing in the water. That means looking beyond the edge of the water and addressing the amount of deck space, deck chairs, cabanas, f&B and retail outlets, technology integration, and of course ride mix. It all ties together to build the experience you really want to deliver. These are the fundamentals of designing a great park that will never disappear – just continue to evolve over time as new trends and technologies emerge.”

“I think we could categorise the trends we’re seeing into two categories: enduring and emerging,” says

AUTUMN PART 1 2021

Park World editor, Becci Knowles finds out what’s new and what’s next in the world of waterparks.

Dawn Kirby, senior marketing manager, WhiteWater. “In the enduring trends column, we continue to see IP-based attractions grow in popularity and scope. Merlin Entertainments continues to expand its LEGOLAND Water Parks, earlier this year opening its first park in Europe at Gardaland Resort in Italy. Featuring a LEGO -themed RainFortress and hand-carved DUPLO characters, the park’s use of IP resonates with its young audience and transports them into a land of make-believe.” Dawn offers this as an example: “In the Americas, just around the corner from Cancun Airport, Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya’s water park, Aqua Nick opened this summer. The largest theming project that WhiteWater has ever created, the park incorporates Nickelodeon’s IP from much loved brands, PAW Patrol, SpongeBob SquarePants, and more. The collaboration with Water Technology, Inc. and Karisma Hotels & Resorts helped to create one of the largest themed water parks in the world.”

In-water active play is extremely popular right now says ADG. “You can look to a recent renovation/expansion project we did at Columbus Zoo’s Zoombezi Bay. We added an Adventure Lagoon that included an in-water obstacle course, two drop slides, in-water basketball/play
