President Lacalle Pou praised San Rafael Hotel progress refurb
The President of the Republic of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, was invited to see progress made of development and refurbishment work carried out by the Cipriani Group, on the grounds of the former Hotel San Rafael. The Cipriani Ocean Resort Residences & Casino is being developed in Punta del Este, and the President was said to be “very impressed”, by what he saw, also highlighting that more than 550 people were working directly at the site. Touring the works on Wednesday, August 28, President Lacalle was joined by the general director of Administration and Human Resources of the Municipality of Maldonado, Miguel Abella; Soledad Laguarda; and works
director Jorge Píriz, who pointed out that the hotel will be inaugurated in December 2025. President Lacalle said he was “amazed” to know, for the first time, what was being achieved. Lacalle added that the development of San Rafael is one of the most talked about projects during the past 10 years of government and recalled that there had been many doubts but today “reality shows that the hotel is going to be rebuilt as it was,” also highlighting the importance that the hotel will have for tourism and the Department of Maldonado, and the global firm that is developing the project.
The president said: “You have to see the number of people who work there, the quality of the work and the progress made,” adding that when he came by in summertime, he saw the number of people working directly and indirectly, which is
something for the Maldonado residents to think about. The Uruguayan president also pointed out that the condition of the hotel building made it very difficult to recover, and now a replica of the San Rafael Hotel is being carried out and that that promise made by the Cipriani Group is being fulfilled, pointing out that it will be an “emblematic” place for the region.
