THE PLAZA AT 50
The
Plaza at 50
28 JUNE 2021
Las Vegas has a plethora of iconic casino properties, one of which is celebrating 50 years in business this year. We salute and celebrate The Plaza in this interview with CEO Jonathan Jossel
Casino International: There are not many properties that have celebrated 50 years in Las Vegas - what’s the key to The Plaza’s longevity? Jonathan Jossel: The Plaza is an iconic property that values its customers and has always been committed to providing them with a classic Vegas experience. Whether it was the Rat Pack Era or now in 2021, the Plaza realizes providing memorable experiences and building long- lasting customer relationships is key to the property’s longevity.
CI: Gaming has changed so much in the last couple of decades; what do you think has been the biggest change as an operator? This might be in terms of technology, clientele, your offering, or all of these things and more. JJ: Gaming has changed thanks in large part to new technology. As an operator, the biggest change we’ve seen is how our offering needs to continually evolve to reflect a greater diversity of options that meet our customers’ gaming interests. Our customers want a wide range of gaming options – not just the newest machines. So, we look for ways to enhance our casino experience with both the latest technology and games that pay homage to our gaming history. Retro games like Silver Strike are increasing in popularity today, just like vinyl
records are in the music industry, and we have seen that our guests enjoy the opportunity to play the machines that we brought back to the casino floor last year. Similarly, gaming is attracting a whole new generation, especially through social media, so we created a first of its kind collaboration with Brian Christopher, a successful video creator and influencer with over half a million followers on his social media channels. The Brian Christopher Slots area at the Plaza is the ultimate destination for slot machine enthusiasts from around the world looking to play the games they’ve watched on Brian Christopher’s YouTube and Facebook.
CI: What’s the key, do you think, to The Plaza retaining its vitality and relevance in the rejuvenated Downtown LV? JJ: The Plaza has been a leader and staunch supporter of the revitalization of downtown Las Vegas. From its $35 million renovation in 2011 to continual updates in the decade since – including: the opening of the award- winning Oscar’s steakhouse, refurbishing the rooftop pool and adding dedicated pickleball courts, renovating 100-plus guest rooms in the North Tower into premium Luxe guest rooms and suites, debuting new entertainment and dining options, upgrading the convention area, and creating the Core Arena as downtown’s only outdoor equestrian center and multipurpose arena – the Plaza
