Gaming For Africa Sun International Covid-19 Closures Update


Casino International’s Africa partner is the excellent Gaming For Africa magazine, bringing you the continent’s latest developments


Sun International has announced today that two of its properties will remain open during the level four covid-lockdown announced recently by the South African government, namely The Table Bay hotel in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, and The Boardwalk in Gqeberha. All other hotel and casino properties will be


temporarily closed for the 14 day lockdown. The Group has also taken a decision to temporarily


close its Hotels and Resorts, including Sun City Resort and Wild Coast Sun. Graham Wood, Group COO: Hospitality explained,


“The new regulations require our casinos and restaurants to close, but given the new restrictions on leisure travel into and out of Gauteng, alcohol and the curfew, our Hotels and Resorts will struggle to operate, so we have taken a decision to temporarily close them too. We are mindful that Government is concerned


about the risk of transmission and the need to curtail the rise in new infections. However, these restrictions will have a further negative impact on our Tourism industry, the thousands of people employed and the surrounding local communities. We remain hopeful


New Marketing Manager for Wild Coast Sun Resort


Sun International has announced the appointment of Cynthia Nene as Marketing Manager of Wild Coast Sun Resort in the Eastern Cape. Nene took up the role on 01 April 2021. Nene has solid experience within the Sun


International Group, having started her career in 2006 at Central Office, as a Graduate Management Trainee. The following year, she became the MVG Coordinator at Sibaya Casino, and in 2009, joined Morula Casino and Hotel as the Database Marketing Manager. Three years later, Nene joined Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World as the Customer Relations Manager and acted as the Marketing Manager from March 2014 to April 2015, when she became the Direct Marketing and Loyalty Manager. She took a sho’t left for six months, re-joining


the group in 2018 as Public Relations and Promotions Manager. Now, due to her extensive business acumen, attitude and experience she has again been recognised and promoted to Marketing Manager for The Wild Coast Sun. Nene attended the University of KwaZulu-Natal


where she obtained her honours in Bachelor of Commerce in Business Management and Marketing. She also obtained a National Certificate, Level 3, in Leadership, Communications, Financial operations and Business Operations from QDC. She has also attended several Sun International internal learning and development courses.

Rob Collins Passes Away


Rob Collins, former COO of Sun International and MD of Tsogo Sun has passed away from complications due to covid. Starting his working life as a tax lawyer, Rob made the


shift to the entertainment, leisure and lifestyle sector as the Group Tax and Legal Advisor for Interleisure Ltd. He was CEO of the Ster-Kinekor Group, Chairman of Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox and Columbia in Africa, CEO of MGM Grand SA, Managing Director of Tsogo Sun Gaming and COO of Sun International Ltd. Born and educated in Johannesburg, after


graduating from Wits University Rob had a stint in the Navy, but was transferred to Johannesburg as their legal advisor for Inland Revenue for four years. Then he joined Deloitte’s where he practiced as a tax lawyer, and held the position of associate director.In 1991, Rob changed careers and made his move to Interleisure. He then joined Ster Kinekor as Chief Executive Officer in 1993 where he also served as Chairman of Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox and Columbia in Africa, sitting on their World Wide Strategic Committees.


In 2000 he joined one of South Africa’s largest


black empowerment companies as Chief Executive Officer MGM Grand SA and later as Managing Director of Tsogo Sun Gaming. He spent 14 years with Tsogo Sun before moving to Sun International in 2014 and served as Group Chief Strategy and Operations Officer until his early retirement in July 2019. Rob also served as a trustee on the Apartheid Museum Board, plus the South African Hall of Fame Board, and the Marketing Achievements Council.
