Growth in online and mobile gaming was pretty inevitable during a lockdown, though not the growth it would have been if somehow professional sports had been playable anywhere in the world. Imagine if live sports betting had been possible, the roof would likely have blown off. It’s no coincidence that in the wake of lockdown, many American states are looking more seriously at legalising sports betting. There really is no good reason why most states don’t already have it – though if you’d like to understand some of US sports’ reticence about betting, look no further than the brilliant John Sayles movie Eight Men Out which popped up   World Series at the season’s culmination. The story had a huge effect on the American sporting consciousness and its consequences resonated for decades. Plus, it’s a great movie.
