We talk to MD Peter Beighton about the company’s recent success in meeting demand from housing developers and providing technical support for installers.

the building,” says Peter, “and the interest we’re getting for our new range of wall-hung indoor heat pumps has been incredible.” The ongoing development of its
company that can trace its heritage back to the industrial revolution and the dominance of coal
heat pump portfolio has largely been responsible for the company doubling its turnover last year and, despite a slow start to the year following the withdrawal of ECO, it is now on course to repeat the feat over the next 12 months.
Close partnership So what has been the secret behind the company’s success? “We’re small enough to be
agile,” says Peter, “and we work really closely with our manufacturing partners in China on product design. Not only are the heat pumps a good price, but the quality is superb.” One of the keys to the growing popularity of the Activair units is that they can often provide a solution for locations where heat pumps would otherwise not be considered to be a viable proposition. “Our new R290 3.2kW models
are ideal for apartments and smaller new builds, say less than
100m2 properties, where there
perhaps isn’t the space for an outdoor unit,” explains Peter. “There’s a lot of excitement from developers about being able to put them out of the way in a loft, garage or airing cupboard. In most instances they would be replacing direct electric heating, where they would previously be looking to install panel heaters which would struggle to abide with the latest SAP regulations.” Designed to supply both
heating and hot water, when fi tted with a domestic hot water cylinder, the Activair R290 (pictured above, left) is available as a wall mounted 3.2kW unit or a fl oor standing 5kW unit. On the outside of the property, only the two vents are visible while, on the inside, the unit has similar dimensions to a domestic boiler. “We can also do cooling from
the wall-hung heat pump as well, through fan coils,” adds Peter, “something which is fast
becoming a lot more popular for obvious reasons. “Another of our USPs is that
every heat pump has a SIM card built in them, allowing us to log into every unit, commission remotely and help solve any issues without visiting the site. Social housing providers can have access to the data if they want it and on some of our units we also have a feature where we can monitor humidity for signs of mould in their properties. We can set up an alarm which would be triggered if humidity levels reach a certain level.”
Quietly does it Further responding to the needs of customers and end-users has seen the company focus on the issue of heat pump noise levels. A recent survey conducted by Quiet Mark revealed that 63% of consumers would be infl uenced by noise levels when deciding whether to purchase a heat

Peter explains: “We understand that today’s installers are under increasing pressure, not only to deliver projects effi ciently, but to get complex low-temperature systems right fi rst time. Our free design service is all about removing that burden. By providing a complete, tailored system design from plans, we give installers the confi dence that every element, from heat pump sizing to radiators and pipework, has been specifi ed correctly.” ◼

Taking care of net-zero objectives
Air source heat pumps (ASHP) from Panasonic have provided the foundation for a fully electric heating strategy for Goodmayes Hospital, a mental health facility in the London Borough of Redbridge. Once a derelict Victorian building that had remained unused for decades, it has recently been transformed into a modern NHS healthcare facility capable of meeting its long-term sustainability and net zero objectives. The hospital’s heating needs
have been met by a cascade system comprising three 30kW Aquarea M Series T-CAP air source heat pumps. The T-CAP (Total Capacity) technology
has been designed to maintain full heating output even in very cold outdoor conditions. T-CAP systems use enhanced compressor and refrigerant injection technology to deliver reliable performance and maintain rated heating capacity at low temperatures, reducing or eliminating the need for backup electric heating. Together, the units provide a total heating capacity of 60kW, with a third unit installed for back up/reserve for when any maintenance is required on the units, ensuring that the building still has all of the heat load required, delivering a fully electric, renewable-based heat
source that removes the need for fossil fuel consumption while maintaining the reliability expected in a healthcare environment. To deliver a fully integrated
low-carbon heating solution, the heat pumps were installed alongside the ThermaSkirt EasyClean LST system from DiscreteHeat, a space-saving solution that sits behind skirting boards. As well as reducing energy consumption, the low temperature system is ideal for mental health and healthcare facilities where careful consideration needs to be given to potential ligature risks. ◼
