Online resource for introduction to heat pumps

A free digital On Demand course has been launched by Ideal Heating to provide the heating industry with a better knowledge of heat pumps. The Introduction to Air Source Heat Pumps course is aimed at many people across the sector, including existing heating engineers, newly-qualifi ed engineers, apprentices, merchants and specifi ers and covers everything from how they work, where they can be fi tted and how they are controlled. Developed in partnership with BPEC, the course should take between two and three hours to complete and features 11 modules, with subjects including the diff erent types of air source heat pumps, how refrigerants work, electrical considerations, controls, frost protection and funding. Each module has been produced as a bite-size style video, providing participants with an immersive and engaging style of training whilst allowing them to learn at their own pace. The course can either be completed in one go, or in sections, with learners having the fl exibility

to jump in and out of modules as needed. Content also remains available after completion, and can be referred back to. Questions will be asked as the modules progress to ensure understanding whilst aiding memory retention, with an optional assessment at the end. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/1024/18

Focus on renewables

Pipe selection and heat networks

GF Building Flow Solutions has launched a new CPD accredited by CIBSE, ‘Minimise the heat and energy losses of heat networks’, aimed at building services engineers. The hour-long, face-to-face session looks at the importance of community and district heating networks, the relevant legislation, and advises how to optimise their performance through the use of efficient, pre-insulated pipe systems. The CPD will cover the types of heat networks, their role

in reaching net zero, codes of practice and insight into funding. The CPD will go on to look at system structures for sustainable heating and cooling, from outside to inside the building, the main issues to consider when it comes to system design, and the benefits of pre-insulated pipework. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/1024/20

The Colchester Institute has inaugurated the region’s fi rst Net Zero and Renewables Centre, aimed at training future renewable heating engineers. In collaboration with Gasway Services, the centre will focus on skills related to air source heat pumps, solar PV technology, battery storage and electric vehicle charging. The project received signifi cant support from

Heat pumps covered in one day

Two new heat pump training courses are now available at Grant UK’s Training Academy. These face-to-face courses include a product training course on the Aerona 290 heat pump range as well as a course dedicated to the basics of heat pump system design. The courses will be delivered at Grant’s

Training Academy HQ in Wiltshire and at other training venues located throughout England, Scotland and Wales. Both new courses are free of charge and join the company’s existing heat pump course catalogue, which includes the Aerona3

wiring, control system confi guration, installation, commissioning and servicing as well as fault fi nding. It combines theory with hands on training, and covers safe practice and protective zones when working with R290 refrigerant.

The Grant Air Source Heat Pump System

Design course is also one-day and provides installers training on the basics of system design for Grant heat pumps. The content of this course has been taken from the previous Grant Aerona3

two-day course and installers heat

pump product training course and OFTEC heat pump qualifi cations and assessments. The one-day course also covers the Aerona Smart heat pump system controller, electrical

a £500,000 grant from the government’s Local Skills Improvement Fund. Key industry partners,

including Samsung Climate Solutions and Worcester Bosch, have contributed equipment for training purposes. The centre is designed to enhance the skills of both apprentices and existing professionals in the renewable technology sector. Gasway, which is part of the housing provider, Flagship Group, helped specify, design and install the technologies for the centre. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/1024/21

will learn about heat loss calculations, heat pump selection, emitter sizing and selection, pipe sizing and pressure loss calculation, and sound level calculation for MCS020. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/1024/19

For gas installers

A Heat Pump Workshop tailored for gas installers has been launched by Stiebel Eltron. The course covers essential topics, including the diff erences between gas boilers and heat pump systems, hydraulic and electrical diagrams, and installation methods. Participants will gain practical skills in sizing heat pumps and servicing, including commissioning processes. The programme also debunks common myths about heat pumps and provides insights into air source versus ground source systems and how pre-plumbed cylinders can decrease installation time. The course is designed to equip installers with the knowledge needed to thrive in the renewable energy market. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/1024/22
