PHAM NEWS | OCTOBER 2024 EnergyMatters Partnership to reduce running costs
Energy Supplier OVO and heat pump manufacturer Mitsubishi Electric have announced a new partnership that provides more households access to its Heat Pump Plus add-on tariff . The Heat Pump Plus add-on off ers OVO customers with a Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan air source heat pump the opportunity to heat their homes for 15p per kWh, compared to the average standard variable rate tariff (SVT) cost of 21.29p per kWh. This means that OVO customers could shave over a third (35%) off their home heating bills compared to the market average. All Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan heat
pump users with an active MELCloud account are eligible for this off ering if they switch their energy account to OVO (the off er will initially be limited to 100 customers). Russell Dean, Mitsubishi Electric
residential product group director, comments: “At Mitsubishi Electric we are dedicated to making sustainable heating solutions more accessible and aff ordable
Growing solar
power market A recent survey of 2,000 homeowners undertaken on behalf of Marley, the manufacturer of pitched roof systems, shows that 49% of homeowners are considering investing in solar panels on their roof. The primary motivation cited by 90% of respondents was a desire to reduce the cost of their energy bills. Other reasons put forward were a wish to generate their own power (63%) and to reduce carbon emissions (46%). The company says that UK
homeowners are increasingly looking to
for households. Through our partnership with OVO, we are enabling our Ecodan heat pump users to enjoy signifi cant savings on their heating bills, while also contributing to a greener future. By working together, we can help households transition away from gas boilers and towards more energy-effi cient, low-carbon alternatives, while also reducing their energy bills.” ◼

solar as an accessible solution to help them tackle the cost-of-living crisis, lower their energy bills and create a sustainable future for their properties. Housing developers and local authorities are also recognising the benefi ts of solar PV systems. Solar is helping the construction sector meet legislative demands for low carbon emission new homes and is also supporting local authorities as they use government funding to improve the energy effi ciency of legacy housing stock. Government statistics from 2023 show
that solar installations stand at over 1.35 million, with the period between 2022 and 2023 witnessing the largest annual panel installation increase for seven years. ◼

Promoting renewable liquid gasses
With increasing media focus on renewable energy and electrifi ed heating, many installers may be considering how this impacts their customers, especially those off - grid with limited options. Recent polling
of over 2,500 rural consumers, carried out on behalf of Liquid Gas UK, found that over 77% of people would be supportive of a policy that allows them to use their existing boiler, running on renewable fuels, beyond 2035. The trade association for the LPG industry
is promoting the benefi ts of Renewable Liquid Gasses (RLGs) which it is argued will help avoid the need for costly system upgrades, yet still align with the push for decarbonisation. Derived from sustainable sources, such as
biomass and household rubbish, renewable liquid gasses, such as bioLPG and rDME, are said to off er a futureproof option for liquifi ed petroleum gas (LPG) users. They are chemically identical to traditional LPG, off ering the same clean-burning properties, portability and convenience but with a 90%
reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional LPG. Due to their
chemical similarity, the transition from LPG to renewable liquid gas is simple, explains Liquid Gas UK’s CEO, George Webb: “One of the most important things installers need to know is that
RLGs are a drop-in replacement. This means switching to RLG doesn’t require costly system changes as customers can continue using their existing boilers, pipework and appliances. RLGs can be blended with LPG, stored in the same cylinders and tanks, and transported as part of the usual delivery process. “Given that aff ordability is a priority for
homeowners, this provides a major advantage over more disruptive alternatives like heat pumps, which for off -grid, older properties often require expensive retrofi tting and insulation upgrades,” he adds. Liquid Gas UK is committed to providing
the support needed to instil confi dence in recommending RLGs, off ering resources, technical guides and safe codes of practice. ◼
