Cloud Services

How to master cloud migration and modernisation first time around

Geoff Barnett, tech lead and principal architect for cloud services at Crayon explains how to guide customers towards a successful cloud migration.

I

t’s no secret that cloud technologies are at the heart of game-changing capabilities across industries, empowering organisations

to seize innovations at speed, bring down costs and scale solutions at their will. It’s therefore no surprise that the demand for these services isn’t set to slow down anytime soon. And the rewards for adoption are rich – McKinsey & Company estimates cloud adoption to fuel $3 trillion of EBITDA value by 2030. However, businesses are oſten leſt in

limbo trying to figure out the right cloud adoption strategy for their needs. Whether it’s migrating traditional architectures to the cloud, modernising existing applications towards a more ‘cloud native’ architecture, or a combination of both, knowing exactly how to become a modern, cloud-driven organisation can be daunting without the right guidance. Tese projects tend to take considerable time, effort, and

resources to execute – and businesses need to know they’re investing in an approach that will pay off. Te consequences

of getting it wrong, including late delivery, business disruption, and committing long-term expenditure towards the wrong resources, could be devastating. But when there’s not a one-size- fits-all approach, how can you help organisations banish the roadblocks to success and achieve a headache-free cloud migration?

Start with the ‘why’ Te north star for any migration should always be the business case. Why is the organisation moving to the cloud in the first place? What do they hope to gain? Mapping all actions to this goal will determine the most effective course, whether they are driven by improvements in

operational efficiency and resilience, or the promise of growth from new innovation opportunities and hyperscalability. For some organisations the priority may be to cut costs. In

which case, modernising an application in a way that enables it to scale out and scale in based on demand may be the best way of investing your resources. Tis modernisation will be much more
