All new developments should be accompanied by the extra investment needed to enhance local services too, and so that residents don’t have to rely on cars to live a full life. Green MPs will also campaign to ensure that everybody lives within 15 minutes’ walking distance of a nature-rich greenspace. We will ensure car-free access to the National Parks with new cycling, walking, wheeling and bus links. Labour will give mayors the power to create unified and
integrated transport systems, allowing for more seamless journeys, and to promote Active Travel networks. Labour will also develop a long-term strategy for transport, ensuring transport infrastructure can be delivered efficiently and on time.
The Scottish National Party No explicit mention of cycling or Active Travel. Invest in safer roads. Reducing road traffic is key to cutting emissions, but in a rural and sparsely populated country, not everywhere and everyone can be expected to make the same changes at the same time.
It is vital that we ensure roads are as safe, reliable and resilient as possible. We are committed to dualling the A9 in full between Perth and Inverness and improving the A96, including dualling Inverness to Nairn and the Nairn Bypass. We will press the UK Government to fulfil their commitment to fund improvements to the A75.
Liberal Democrats
By investing in electric vehicles and clean public transport, as well as encouraging walking and cycling, Liberal Democrats will enhance local, regional and national connectivity while boosting the economy, protecting the environment and improving public health. We will transform how people travel by creating new
cycling and walking networks with a new nationwide active travel strategy.
Give more of the roads budget to local councils to maintain existing roads, pavements and cycleways, including repairing potholes.

cycleways and footpaths, built using sustainable materials, reimagine how we use streets in residential areas to reduce traffic and open them up for use by the community, and adopt Active Travel England’s objective for 50% of trips in England’s towns and cities to be walked, wheeled or cycled by 2030.
Reform UK No explicit mention of cycling or Active Travel. Scrap net zero and related subsidies. Stop the war on drivers. Legislate to ban ULEZ Clean Air Zones and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. Scrapping Net Zero means no more bans on petrol and diesel cars and no legal requirements for manufacturers to sell electric cars. We will keep the speed limit low where safety is critical.
Otherwise, 20MPH zones will be scrapped. Accelerate transport infrastructure. Focus on our coastal regions, Wales, the North, and the Midlands. Improve existing rail and road links. Integrated services are critical.
Plaid Cymru
As well as investing in public transport, more Active Travel options have to be provided if we are to persuade people to make less use of their cars.
Plaid Cymru supports investment in Active Travel routes, and would ensure that changes to roads policy happen at the same time as increased investment in our public transport systems.
The need to change the way we travel is abundantly clear. Air pollution is leading to an increase in asthma and lung conditions amongst children and dementia in the older population. We support clear air zones near major centres of population, and traffic calming measures to increase road safety.
