The Art of... THE INVINCIBLE

Based on Stanisław Lem’s 1964 novel of the same name, The Invincible is one of the most visually distinctive sci-fi adventure games of recent years. Art director Wojciech Ostrycharz takes us on a journey of discovery

HOW DID THE IDEA FOR THE INVINCIBLE’S VISUAL DESIGN COME ABOUT? I believe in the power of stylized graphics. Therefore, we sought inspiration in painting, drawing, and even engineering projects from the 1960s. Exploring various directions, we concluded that using atmospheric retro styling will allow us to build a unique world, close to the visions of the author and imaginings of space from the times when Stanisław Lem was creating.

WHAT WERE YOUR VISUAL INFLUENCES AND REFERENCE POINTS? The source of our inspiration were the science fiction book covers from the 1950s and 1960s, especially those created by Chris Foss. We were looking for bright, saturated illustrative colours, a certain naivety in the shapes of objects. We wanted the player to not only immerse themselves in Lem’s imaginative world but also feel like they are interacting with art.

WHAT OTHER PROJECTS HAVE YOU WORKED ON THAT INFORMED THE VISUAL DESIGN OF THE GAME? We tried not to draw from the design of other games to avoid repetitiveness. Instead, we conducted thorough research, ranging from the analysis of atompunk aesthetics to interior designs of spaceships from the era of the space race.

WHO WERE THE ARTISTS ON THE PROJECT AND WHAT DID THEY BRING TO THE TABLE? I created the initial sketches for the project about six years ago, along with establishing the main artistic principles. Shortly afterward, Sebastian Spłuszka joined
