Richard Fox Senior Programmer

Sammi Luzon QA Lead

Taku Mahvunduke Junior Designer

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE? My role spans lots of different areas. I enjoy getting to work on new technology and being able to constantly learn new things and apply them in my day to day work. There are always interesting challenges to overcome due to the complex nature of the project. Being involved in gameplay development also allows me to have a meaningful impact on the design of the game which is important for me as I am quite creative for a programmer. The whole company has the option to participate in regular playtests which encourage us to give feedback including any ideas for the game going forward. I like that the company is very open in this way as it means that any one person can have a real impact on the game and its future.

WHAT IS LIFE LIKE AT PAYLOAD STUDIOS? Payload has many clubs for people to join and if there isn’t something for you, you can always form a new club with the support of the company. The office itself is an interesting place to work as we have an area for Payload Studios employees but the rest of the building is the Tentacle Zone. This means that there are other games companies that have office space in the building, so you run into all kinds of people in the common areas, which leads to interesting conversations and knowledge sharing.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN A TEAM MEMBER? A common and essential criteria for testers is having an eye for detail which helps with the bug finding process. Communication is a big part of the job, and at Payload we work really hard to have an inclusive culture where everyone’s opinions are respected and valued. As well as being a great tester, we also look for someone willing to work as a team to continuously improve the work culture at Payload.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE FOR CAREER PROGRESSION? There are a few paths and it can depend on what the goal is! There is the QA path which can lead to a QA lead or a QA manager role. You can even go the production route and become a producer which aligns with some of the work QA does. There are also other disciplines within the industry like art, programming, design etc, but this might come easier to those who work as embedded testers since they closely work with these departments. In Payload’s case, we work in small teams which allows us to work closely and be open to discussions and mentoring. All you have to do is ask!

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO JOIN PAYLOAD STUDIOS? I was looking for the next challenge for me to grow and learn in my career, and I saw Payload Studios as a perfect place for that! After applying for a design role and being in contact with Kris [Payload’s lead designer], I was adamant I had made the right choice. After passing the interview process and meeting the team, I became an honorary Payloader! One of the awesome things that

gravitated me towards joining Payload, was the people! Each of them with their own experience they’ve accumulated in the industry, from which I would be able to learn from and pick their brains on various subjects.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT PAYLOAD STUDIOS? I love working with so many different types of people. It keeps the job fresh, interesting, and challenging and allows me to learn from each individual on the team. I love the process of starting with an idea and being an important part of how that can become something potentially a lot of people can experience and enjoy.
