100,000 gamers tuned in to watch the Green Games Showcase at Summer Game Fest 2026 on June 9th. The Showcase shined a Summer Game Fest spotlight on PC games that reconnect us with nature, spark hope for the future, and remind us what’s worth protecting – including both upcoming and established titles, with 2.4m impressions driven to the supporting event page on Steam. The Green Games Showcase was hosted by Anjali Bhimani, the award-winning actor, voice artist, author and longtime games community advocate, and PlanetPlay’s very own Chief Strategy Officer & Good Game Club podcast host, Jude Ower MBE.
But when you step back, the games industry already possesses
something that most charities and NGOs would love to have more of: engaged communities, global reach and the ability to inspire action at scale. Every day, studios build systems that motivate players to
participate, collaborate and contribute. We create live events that attract millions of users. We drive engagement through limited-time content, rewards, challenges and community activations (see boxouts on Battle for the Habitats and the Green Games Showcase). In other words, we (as an industry and as PlanetPlay) already know
how to mobilise people. The question is: are you willing to apply that super power beyond the boundaries of your games?
FROM AWARENESS TO ACTION Over the past two years, we’ve seen growing evidence that players want opportunities to engage with meaningful causes. Through Play2Act, our collaboration with the United Nations
Development Programme, more than 200,000 players across 189 countries have already shared their views on climate, sustainability and social issues. The initiative has generated insights that are now being used within UNDP’s SparkBlue platform, helping policymakers and international organisations better understand public attitudes and behaviour. What Play2Act demonstrated is that players don’t switch off when
presented with real-world issues. They lean in. The challenge then becomes: what comes next? The UNICEF
partnership represents one answer to that question – If Play2Act was about understanding what players think, PlayForEveryChild is about giving them a simple, accessible way to take action.
IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE COMPLICATED There’s a misconception that participating in impact initiatives requires extensive development resources. The reality is that there are multiple levels of engagement: Some studios contribute content; some run in-game activations; some support through marketing, PR or community channels; others simply provide a game as part of a wider collection. The point is always the same – participation, not perfection.
It aims to encourage thoughtful discussion around how games can contribute positively to environmental awareness and action, while recognising that sustainability across the games industry remains an ongoing journey. A huge ‘thank you’ to all the amazing studios and publishers that participated.
We’ve learned through multiple initiatives over the last three years
that meaningful outcomes can be generated through a variety of approaches. What matters most is lowering barriers to participation and making it easy for studios to get involved. If only a handful of companies can participate, the model doesn’t scale. But scale is exactly what the industry can deliver for UNICEF.
WHY THIS IS A GAME CHANGER The PlayForEveryChild PC Games Collection is one of the world’s most respected humanitarian organisations recognising that games can be a vital channel for engagement, awareness and fundraising. That should matter to all of us. For years, our industry has argued that games deserve greater
recognition for their cultural influence and societal impact and, increasingly, organisations outside the games sector are beginning to agree. Now it’s up to us to prove them right.
LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN The PlayForEveryChild PC Games Collection for UNICEF launches this October. I’m inviting studios, publishers and platform partners to contribute titles and help create something genuinely industry-wide. It will raise funds, it will support UNICEF’s work around the
world and it will also send a broader message: That even during challenging times, our industry is capable of thinking beyond the next release cycle.
