I think everyone on that team would agree that we were all standing on the shoulders of Mr. Dinsey. The relationships he’d fostered across the games business, combined with his willingness to make introductions for us young cherubs, was the start of everything. From there, it

was up to us to use these connections to build our own networks. I didn’t fully appreciate it at the time, but we were lucky to be

running a trade magazine predominantly aimed at two audiences – retailers and games publishers – in an era when physical retail, physical product, and the commercial ‘spikes’ of blockbuster releases still ruled the roost. Tim Ingham, MCV 2006-2009

I was working in coin-op amusements media (arcades) and wanted to get into consumer games (trade media), as the launch of the PlayStation kind of killed the coin-op arcade business. I sent my CV to CTW and MCV at the same time and MCV was the first to come back to me and then my hooks were in. Alex Jarvis, the then Sales Director, asked me if I’d like to come and have a chat and that’s when I met Stuart. At my second interview, Stuart asked if I’d like to meet him at a show they were attending, which was my first introduction to ECTS. It was like getting a golden ticket and walking into the Chocolate Factory and meeting trade media’s Willy Wonka. Chris Buckley, MCV & Develop 2000-2008

Retailers and distribution were really important to MCV. Not just in terms of advertising, but because we wrote about them. But as they became less important with the transition from physical to digital and having a more competitive online media, things became more tricky. Also the industry grew up quite a bit. It wasn’t quite so easy to get the European boss of PlayStation on the phone rather than scheduling it three weeks ahead via a series of PAs. It was right that the industry matured and became more professional, but it wasn’t quite the same as when you had everyone’s mobile number and could just ring them up for a quick chat. Lisa Carter, MCV & Develop 1998-2015
