SUSTAINABLE AND MINIMALIST PACKAGING

as more cities introduce packaging regulations. Eco-conscious shoppers often choose where to buy based on sustainability practices — and they’re willing to pay a little more for packaging that aligns with their values. When sourcing compostable

packaging, look for suppliers who provide third-party certifications to verify their materials are compostable in real-world conditions. This not only builds customer trust but also ensures you’re compliant with emerging legislation.

Packaging material innovations According to Green Valley Packaging’s (GV Pack) Best Sustainable Packaging Materials 2025 report, the materials emerging for the bakery market are those that combine functionality, aesthetics, and minimal environmental impact.

Moulded Pulp: Moulded pulp isn’t just for eggs anymore. It can be shaped into elegant trays or clamshells for artisan breads, pastries, or cookies while keeping them cushioned and protected. For baked goods, it offers two big wins: it absorbs a bit of moisture (helping keep crusty breads crisp), and it’s naturally compostable, giving bakeries a sustainable alternative to plastic clamshells. Its textured surface also gives a handcrafted, premium feel that pairs perfectly with artisan products.

Bamboo-Based Paper and Boxes: Bamboo’s rapid growth and strength make it ideal for bakery boxes and carriers for cakes, tarts, or croissants. Its smooth finish can be printed with minimalist branding for a luxury look. Because bamboo is naturally renewable and biodegradable, it lets bakeries align with eco-conscious consumers while signalling quality and care.

Bagasse: Bagasse, the fibrous byproduct of sugarcane, is perfect for muffin trays, cake holders, and takeaway dessert cups. It’s heat-resistant, which makesit ideal for warm baked goods, and it holds structure even with moist items like

sticky buns or fruit pies. For bakeries that want to champion circular economy principles, using a byproduct of sugar production is a great story to tell.

PLA and Cornstarch Bioplastics: For bakery packaging that needs visibility— like windowed cookie boxes or pastry bags—PLA or cornstarch bioplastics provide the transparency of plastic with a lower carbon footprint. They let customers see the product (important for impulse buys!) while keeping packaging compostable or recyclable where facilities exist.

Limited-edition sustainable packaging As consumer expectations change and develop, bakery packaging is transforming into something with clean lines, recyclable materials and pared- back designs are increasingly replacing excessive plastics and elaborate wrapping, reflecting a shift toward both minimalism and sustainability. This trend is being driven not only by eco-conscious shoppers who value authenticity and responsibility, but also by new regulations and innovations that are reshaping how food brands bring their products to market. In bakery production especially, where tradition and trust are central to brand identity, packaging has become a canvas to signal quality while embracing environmentally responsible practices. It is against this backdrop that

Sonoco, a global leader in sustainable packaging solutions, and Grands Moulins de Paris, the French miller behind the much-loved Francine brand, are marking a milestone. To celebrate Francine’s 60th anniversary, the two companies have collaborated on a limited-edition release of the brand’s flagship Suprême flour, presented in Sonoco’s recyclable GreenCan® paper- based container. The partnership not only pays tribute to the brand’s heritage
