SUSTAINABLE AND MINIMALIST PACKAGING LESS IS
From heritage brands celebrating milestones to innovators reimagining how materials are sourced, designed, and disposed of, packaging now carries the weight of both brand identity and environmental responsibility. Kennedy’s Bakery Production reports.
W
ith nearly 75% of global consumers now expecting brands to reduce packaging waste
(according to the latest FMCG Gurus report), bakery producers are facing a new kind of pressure: design packaging that’s sustainable without sacrificing appeal. What was once a back-of-house consideration is now a front-and-centre brand statement, influencing everything from shelf impact to social media shareability. As a result, the industry is embracing innovative formats and materials that tell a story of quality, responsibility, and forward thinking.
Compostable packaging solutions for bakers Choosing compostable solutions is no longer just a nice-to-have, but a strategic move that can strengthen your reputation, build customer loyalty, and align your business with the growing demand for waste-free options. Compostable packaging is about
preserving the quality of your products, enhancing the customer experience, and future-proofing your bakery
Compostable vs Biodegradable
The first step is understanding the difference between compostable and biodegradable. Compostable materials are designed to fully decompose into nutrient-rich soil under specific conditions, usually within months in industrial composting facilities. This means they actively give back to the environment. Biodegradable materials, on the other hand, break down more slowly and may leave behind microplastics — not exactly the message most bakeries want to send.
• Compostable Paper Bags: Ideal for fresh bread, rolls, cookies, and pastries, these bags are breathable, helping products stay crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. They can be lined with a compostable film to handle oily goods like croissants or chocolate- dipped items without leaking or tearing.
• Compostable Bakery Boxes: For cakes, tarts, and pastries that need
both protection and presentation, compostable bakery boxes made from recycled cardboard offer strength and stackability. Many now include clear, plant-based windows to showcase your bakes without compromising on sustainability.
• Compostable Wrapping Films: These are game-changers for brownies, bars, and single-serve treats that need to stay moist. PLA and cellulose-based films create a moisture barrier while being completely compostable — no plastic guilt for your customers.
• Compostable Trays & Inserts: Perfect for assortments of cupcakes, macarons, or decorated cookies. Moulded fibre or bagasse trays keep items from shifting, reducing damage during delivery. They can even be custom-shaped for seasonal collections, adding a premium feel.
