From adventure to entrepreneurship

Confetti Snacks founder shares their journey to creating delicious veggie chips that combat food waste, all while promoting healthier snacking and sustainability. Kiran Grewal finds out more.

What inspired you to start Confetti Snacks and create a line of veggie chips? Being an avid adventurer, I enjoy exploring nature and wilderness in the countries I visit. I was hiking on a mountain in British Columbia, Canada, a moment of ennui turned into entrepreneurial inspiration. I wondered if

I could create

the “perfect snack”, that is tasty and true to my Singapore roots, and at the same time very nutritious, so people enjoy plant-based goodness on the go. I was tired of bland protein bars and chips that are oily and gross. I began cooking up colourful vegetable chips from my home kitchen in Canada and passing them out to neighbours and friends to try, they loved it. So I returned to Singapore to start Confetti Snacks, and we have now scaled to supermarket and convenience locations nationwide and grew the company to NYC to tap into the largest snack market in the world, the United States. In order to provide healthier alternatives to snacking for the American public.

Can you share more about your journey and the specific moment when you decided to turn “imperfect produce” into delicious snacks? In my world travels, I had the pleasure of visiting farms and agricultural regions. It drove my curiosity as I’m a huge foodie. As I learnt more about the industry, I discovered that about a third of the planet’s food goes to waste, often because of its looks. That’s enough to feed two billion people. While we throw out 2.9 trillion pounds a year globally, nearly 800 million people worldwide suffer from hunger. That is insanity. Although these veggies and fruit may come in strange shapes, they are still highly nutritious. So rather than throwing them out, it would make more sense to creatively upcycle these vegetables and fruit, and craft them into delicious gourmet snacks that celebrate diverse food cultures and give consumers a much healthier alternative.

How did your background and experiences shape your vision for Confetti Snacks?

My background in branding and marketing brands has been a lifelong passion. The valuable part of any business is its brand equity and that has always fascinated me. Having varied experiences around the world really has helped me to create Confetti Snacks which I hope uses business as a force for good

The biggest catalyst for me is the inspiration I took from exploring many countries and what I can do to pay tribute back to the world that has taught me so much.
