Shopfloor TAKE A TOWN

John Lewis, Sidwell Street

JOHN Lewis opened its first store in Devon – across five floors – with £7 million worth of stock, in October 2012. With my daughter off to university, I wanted to do some research on appliances and was looking for a washing machine. After three minutes of browsing, I was approached by Joel. He asked about my budget and I said that I wanted a reliable machine. Joel presented a 7kg Miele model (WDB038WPS), which was priced at £649. As he presented the machine, I could not help but notice that a Panasonic microwave oven with a broken handle had seemingly been dumped on it.

Joel demonstrated the Miele model, highlighting the water protection system and the A+++ energy rating. He told me that Miele washing machines are tested to the equivalent of 20 years use: that’s 10,000 wash hours, which equates to five washes per week for 20 years.

Currys PC World, Rydon Lane Retail

Debenhams,

Park, Digby Road THIS store is located on a busy retail park. With my kitchen refurbishment almost finished, I wanted to buy a built-in oven. Inside the store, I headed to the appliance area and was greeted by a member of staff in the main aisle. There were two products that I thought were suitable. The first was a Neff Slide & Hide model (B4ACF1AN0B), which w as priced at £699. As I browsed the product, including using the Slide & Hide function, I noticed that a lightbox above the oven was quoting Emma Rolls, a senior category manager at Currys PC World: “Baste, taste and monitor your food easily with this disappearing door that glides underneath the oven. A must have design for any stylish kitchen.”

The second model that caught my eye was a

Bosch oven (HBS534BS0B), which was priced at £369.

After five minutes of browsing, and with no

staff in the domestic appliance area of the store, I headed to the exit.

Bedford Street THERE are three Debenhams stores in Devon, however, the stores in Plymouth and Torquay are likely to shut as part of the chain’s store closure programme.

I was looking to buy a kitchen mixer. Once I had located the electricals department, I could not believe the displays, which were a mess, with dust and point-of-sale materials seemingly thrown on the shelves. There were two suitable products on display. The first was a Kenwood model (KM240), which was priced at £170. The second model was from Russell Hobbs (23480), priced at £150. After five minutes of browsing and with no staff in the electricals department, or the neighbouring bedding and luggage departments, I reluctantly left the store.

Total: 7/10 Summary:

Joel gave a basic overview of the models and did not really sell or attempt to close the sale. The store was well presented, except for the Miele model that had the dumped microwave in it.

Having no staff on the shop floor and messy shelves is akin to retail suicide. This is an example on how not to retail in the 21st Century.
