‘We strive to innovate our products according to our customers’ genuine needs’

here has been an interesting and really important shift in the way we interact with our homes these days; the
pandemic meant that our daily routines moved inside, and our homes had to work even harder for us. This led to many consumers
worldwide investing in home improvements, especially smart home devices, and more specifically smart home security, to fit their evolving day-to-day needs and provide peace of mind. ERT Editor, Jack Cheeseman,
interviewed Bas Van Bergen, Commercial Director Europe at Ring – the home security and smart home company owned by Amazon, to talk about the current state of the market.
Q&A
Q: How is the smart home market developing these days? Bas Van Bergen: It’s a very exciting time in the smart home industry, as device makers are continuing to develop technology and features that really focus on simplicity and ease- of-use for the customer.
We know a barrier to smart home
adoption is the fear that it’s only applicable for tech-savvy consumers, or for those with big budgets. We completely understand that initial apprehension. That’s why Ring offers affordable smart security devices and features that allow customers to feel in control with easy installation, set-up and use. All of our devices can be connected together in just one app, avoiding the complexities of switching between different applications and different providers.
Q: How would you say the market been affected by the pandemic? BVB: Our customers have shared how helpful Ring devices have been during the time at home, from facilitating safe, contactless deliveries during work calls, to staying connected through video or Live- View check-ins. Our alarm sensors have also been
known to bring added peace of mind by notifying you if a door has been opened – ideal if you’re working from home with the kids in a different room.
Q: What does this mean for Ring in terms of your current and future developments? BVB: These every day moments, like accepting a delivery while you’re on a call, keep us motivated to invent new solutions for our customers that make their lives more convenient and secure. Like many others, we’ve been working remotely, but this hasn’t stopped us from always innovating on our customers’ behalf. For example, last year we
The Floodlight Cam Wired Pro
introduced radar technology to our product line with the launch of two new premium devices, Video Doorbell Pro 2 and Floodlight Cam Wired Pro. This technology powers our 3D Motion Detection and Bird’s
Ring Alarm. Below: The Stick Up Cam
Eye View features, which give you even more control and context of their motion alerts. We’ve also started rolling out brand
new computer vision features. Package Alerts tells you when packages are delivered within your specified zones, while Custom Event Alerts allows your camera to differentiate between two different views – like your garage door left open or closed – and immediately notifies you. Allowing our customers to tailor
their alerts to their personal preferences is really important for us. We’ll always strive to refine alerts so that customers are only notified about what truly matters to them.
Q: How important is customer feedback to Ring? BVB: We take customer feedback really seriously and always strive to innovate and update our products according to our customers’ genuine needs. For example, many people told us they wanted to have an option that notified their neighbours when their Ring Alarm security system is triggered. That’s why we developed Ring Alarm Outdoor Siren, which gives you a visible,
audible outdoor solution that can be personalised to suit your home. We’ve also redesigned Ring Alarm with a sleek, updated design that is made to fit any type of home.
Q: And what are your plans for the year ahead? BVB: We’ve already had an exciting start to the year, with the launch of two new Ring accessories. Our Alarm Glass Break Sensor for Ring Alarm can detect the sound of glass doors or windows breaking up to 7.6 meters away for an added layer of security. We also have the all-new Pan-Tilt Mount, which is a motorised camera stand that lets your Stick Up Cam swivel and tilt to let you see more of what’s happening at your home. We will continue to make product
decisions that empower our customers with an affordable way to secure their homes. We’re always appreciative of customer feedback and it goes a long way to guiding our decisions on future products and launches.
