Hughes Electrical closes eight stores

Independent electrical retailer Hughes has closed eight of its 18 East Anglia locations, resulting in the loss of around 60 jobs. The sites scheduled to close are Hunstanton,

Wisbech, North Walsham, Dereham, Clacton-on-Sea, Thetford and Diss, along with the company’s delivery depot on Mason Road in Norwich. “These have not been easy decisions to make,”

Chief Executive Mark Wardell said. “Many of the colleagues affected have been with Hughes for a long time and have played a huge part in the success of the business. All will receive the honesty,

respect and support they deserve through the difficult process ahead.” The Norwich depot closure will affect 25

employees. Hughes said those staff members would be able to apply for alternative roles within the business. A further 35 employees will be affected by the store closures. In a statement, the retailer said it recognised the

need to evolve its offering in response to changing customer expectations and the growing popularity of online shopping, and that restructuring was necessary to secure the long-term future of the company.

“We understand this news will be very upsetting for

our teams, but we have acted now to ensure the long- term success of the business,” Mr Wardell added.
