The Story of Knauf Knauf’s presence in the UK and Ireland began in 1988 when it opened a state-of-the-art plasterboard factory in Sittingbourne, Kent. This facility, renowned for producing high-quality plasterboard and foil-backed laminates, laid the foundation for what would be Knauf’s expansion throughout the UK. In 1990, a second plant in Immingham was created and in 1993, the Sittingbourne facility expanded with the addition of a new UK Powder Plant. In 2006, energy-efficient technologies were introduced to the Immingham plant. By 2013, Knauf had unveiled its cutting-edge CUBE training centre in Sittingbourne, a modernist learning environment promoting best practice for industry professionals. Most recently, in 2022, Knauf acquired a plasterboard plant in Newport, South Wales, further solidifying its presence throughout each corner of the UK. More than just plasterboard At the core of Knauf’s success lies a comprehensive range of building products and solutions that goes beyond its plasterboard origins. From full drywall systems to flooring systems, acoustic ceilings, AQUAPANEL® exterior and interior boards and much more, Knauf offers a one-stop shop for merchants, contractors, and builders. Knauf’s drywall partition systems are a great example of Knauf’s complete system solution offering. It includes everything required, from the plasterboard and metal jointing all the way to the finishing screws and accessories. Performance plasterboards are also available for projects that require enhanced performances in areas such as fire resistance, moisture resistance and sound quality. Also included in Knauf’s product offerings are the AQUAPANEL® Cement Board Indoor, a tile backer board for internal bathrooms and wet rooms, as well as Knauf Airless spray finish plaster, acoustic ceiling panels, dry screed flooring and exterior systems. Sustainability
Sustainability is a driving force behind Knauf’s entire operations. Its plasterboard and metal systems are durable, long- lasting and recyclable. Knauf also works with customers on-site to reduce waste, and increase recycling through its Take Back Scheme Partnership. In 2022, Knauf achieved an 8.2% overall reduction in its carbon footprint compared to 2021, with 7.9% reduction in its scope one and two emissions from production facilities. Its sustainability credentials are verified by Planet Mark, alongside ambitious goals for its sustainable future. Objectives include reaching net-zero carbon emissions five years ahead of the Paris Agreement in 2045, directly cutting scope one and two CO2 emissions in half within the next decade, and reducing water withdrawals by a fifth. By 2032, when Knauf celebrates its 100th birthday, it aims to have ceased producing any waste destined for disposal from its plants, quarries, and mines. Partnerships Knauf remains focused on an unwavering commitment to forging deep partnerships within the merchant sector. Through field-based Area Sales Managers all over the UK building strong relationships with merchant partners, Knauf provides exceptional products, marketing materials, and educational promotions to ensure its merchant partners have everything they need to thrive. “We are proud to be sponsoring the Independent Merchant of the Year category (8-20 branches) at the BMJ Awards 2024” said Daniel Whiteland, National Account Director at Knauf UK and Ireland. “This category recognises the vital role that smaller, independent merchants play within our industry, shining a light on those that are hard-working and dedicated to excellence. It aligns perfectly with our commitment to supporting and empowering our merchant partners.” As Knauf continues to offer the future of building products and solutions, its sponsorship of the BMJ Independent Merchant of the Year Award underscores its unwavering support for the merchant industry, and its trailblazers.
