Self build registers underestimate demand
The BMF has learnt that local authorities have greatly under- estimated demand from enthusiasts for serviced plots of land to build their own homes. According to the National Custom & Self Build Association’s latest report, unmet demand for land was approximately 64% in England. Data collected over three years by NaCSBA revealed that 83,430 people were interested - but only 29,697 had signed a Right to Build register.
The Housing and Planning Act 2016 requires local authorities in England to maintain a Right to Build Register to record how many people want to build their own homes - and to meet demand with sufficient planning permissions. Obstacles like joining

This award highlights achievements in: • New Ideas and Concepts: Introducing innovative solutions and fresh perspectives. • Implementation of Innovative Solutions: Successfully bringing new ideas to fruition. • Spotting and Leveraging New Opportunities: Identifying and capitalising on emerging trends and opportunities. The judging panel will include representatives from the BMF, trade press, sponsors, and the current Chair of the BMF Young Merchants Group.

know much about planning permission policy & procedures. Under-pressure town hall planning officers do not want to devote much time & effort to “hold the hand” of self- and custom-builders. This is an emerging market that is not being properly catered for. More effort to bring forward multiple plots and/or serviced sites is required. Richard Bacon, who retired as MP for South Norfolk at the General Election, has a place in history because he successfully steered his Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 through Parliament. Richard supports the BMF and will campaign on this topic despite no longer being a MP.
Last month, the BMF held its bi- annual Sustainability Forum at the National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon, a centre supported by a number of BMF companies.
