Some of the key points from some of the presentations at the NMBS Conference

Charlie Blakemore

Alan Timothy

Alan Timothy: the rise of the machines?  Artificial Intelligence (AI) is now integrated into many parts of life at home and business such as: e-gates at the border, Drug Development, Patient Diagnosis, Route Planning  AI is not new, it dates back to the second world war, with Alan Turing using the first AI to decode the German Enigma machine in Bletchley Park, and the original machine can still be seen. The term Artificial Intelligence was first coined by a UK scientist in 1956.  The key drivers are:

1. Growth in the amount of data, 2. Growth in computing power 3. Better algorithms.

 Currently nearly all AI can be described as ‘Narrow’ in that they are applied to a well-defined problem, such as Chatbots, Fraud detection, Medical scans, pricing.  Machine learning is a form of artificial intelligence that can adapt to a wide range of inputs, such as large sets of historical data, synthesized data, or human inputs. It detects patterns and learn how to make predictions and recommendations by processing data, without explicit programming instruction. Examples of ML led applications: Fraud Detection, Credit Scoring, Product recommendations, Customer Churn predictions  Deep learning uses neural networks—the way neurons interact in the human brain—to ingest data and process it through multiple layers. As an example, in passport e gates, it looks at eyes, ears, nose separately and the then build up to the face. Deep learning uses iteration to self-correct and improve its prediction capabilities. For example, once it “learns” your face it can still recognise you with a beard and glasses.  AI cannot and does not understand or apply context when making any recommendation  AI will not replace your staff, but humans using AI correctly could

Charlie Blakemore: Cyber security  Businesses need to treat cyber risks as another safety issue which should be a part of the daily routine  In a single day, Check Point Cyber Security recorded over 16 and a half MILLION cyber-attacks across the globe. It only takes one to get through and wreak havoc on a business.  Demands made by ransomware criminals can range from £35,000 to £3M. It all depends on your business size; the criminals will demand

a ransom that they think is proportionate to your business size.  Businesses in the Construction Sector are least likely out of any UK industry to have a dedicated CISO (or equivalent), least likely to carry out threat intelligence and the least likely to have thorough security controls in place.  There have been 88 successful ransomware attacks reported in the UK construction sector in the last 3 years.  Hacking is now a global economy, behind the US and China as the third largest in the world  A 158-year-old logistics business – Knights of Old - went out of business just a few months after a ransomware attack  Deep fakes are getting more and more sophisticated, and harder to detect.

Paul McVeigh: The psychology of leadership  Our beliefs dictate every single thing we do  There are three ways to form a belief: through repetition, through heightened emotional experiences, and through someone else’s view  There are three stages of changing beliefs: 1. Opposition- why would you do that? 2. Curiosity – what are you doing? , 3. Acceptance – why wouldn’t you do that?  Understand who it is in your organisation that is blocking change  Make what you are changing to your ‘normal’  Know what you want to achieve. Understand what it is in your current normal that needs to change  Dream what it is you want to achieve  Believe with all your heart that what you want is achievable  Know that things are achievable through meticulous goal-setting  Continually challenge your beliefs as a leader  Decide what you need to believe to achieve the life and the leadership you want  Dream; Believe; Achieve BMJ
