This year marks Builders’ Merchants Journal’s 100th year of publishing to the UK merchanting industry!
century ago, amid the dancing flappers, jazz bands and champagne, there was someone
sitting at a typewriter, tapping away at the pages of the very first issue of Builders’ Merchants Journal – though it was called something like Builder and Timber Merchants Journal back in those days.
Within our 100 years of existence, we have seen change, growth, and remained strong throughout the more turbulent years. Both
us and others in the merchanting industry have continued to stand united and continue to develop in this time proving the friendly and rewarding nature of the industry we exist in. We have all seen change, advancement and new growth in the merchant industry as well as surviving the rolls and twists of time and arm in arm, both have survived this far. Now it’s time to tell the tale. We invite any and all of our merchant and manufacturer friends from far and wide to dig
deep into archives, collections and memory banks for images, stories or memories of BMJ across the past century.
BMJ wants to ensure our
centenary year marks the occasion and celebrates all we have achieved across the years with the help of the relationships and connections we have made throughout. We want to make our centenary year an unforgettable one and we are nothing without the wonderful connections and relationships that make up our industry.
Whilst the industry continues to develop and we are joined by newbies, we know we aren’t
the only ones up here. For those who may even be older than us, please join us to celebrate this momentous occasion as well as the merchants, brands, names and, finally, the magazine.
100 years is approximately five merchant generations, the black and white founding photos of grandfathers and great-uncles brightening to the amber-hues of the second generation in their horn-rimmed glasses standing proudly before an avocado bathroom suite…
