TRANSPORT GETTING THE DOOSAN LOT

David Clarkson, CEO of Doosan Industrial Vehicle UK, talks to BMJ about how selecting a forklift truck brand capable of delivering the ‘whole package’ can bring significant benefits.

B

usinesses often have a variety of tasks that require handling equipment, whether that’s lifting heavy loads in a yard, loading vehicles, stacking palletised goods in a warehouse or performing pedestrian picking operations. The environment in which these trucks operate may require different power options – diesel, gas or electric – and of course, the load- handling capacity needed will vary depending on the applications. So, a comprehensive range of model types will be one of the most important requirements from a forklift truck manufacturer.

Doosan has an extensive range of over 200 models of counterbalance, reach and warehouse trucks, with capacities spanning 1.3 tonnes right up to 25 tonnes, overpower sources of electric, gas and diesel. New models and upgrades to ranges are just part of a continuous programme of investment. Earlier this year Doosan launched a powerful new range of four-wheel electric counterbalance forklift trucks, the B45X-7 Series, offering greater durability, enhanced productivity, increased visibility and an extensive range of safety features as standard. This was followed by a versatile new range of three- wheel electric trucks, the B15R-7 Series, and at the IMHX show, Doosan announced a major upgrade to its high-performance warehouse truck range, with new enhanced high-spec models in the stacker and powered pallet truck ranges.

Above all else, on-site safety must be the highest priority. At Doosan, the wellbeing of the driver and the safety of those sharing the same workspace is a primary focus for

the company’s design engineers. Their safety innovations have gained Doosan many plaudits from the industry, including winning the Forklift Truck Association’s highly coveted Award for Safety Excellence over three consecutive years – for its operator sensing system, an inbuilt auto-slow down function, and a rear grab handle & horn.

In addition, standard Doosan forklift safety features include: excellent visibility through the mast and overhead guard; a low dashboard for a clear sight of the fork heels; low and wide non-slip step with clear floor plate and grab handle for safer cab access; a vertical exhaust; lower noise and vibration; and completely enclosed oil-cooled disc brakes for more reliable braking in dusty and wet environments.

Ensuring uptime for every truck is critical to any busy operation. Having easily accessible and reliable service support, to regularly maintain vehicles and be there quickly when a truck goes down, can make all the difference to on- site performance. Trucks not only need to be designed and built to be easily serviced, but the manufacturer’s service support network must be inherently responsive – and that means a guaranteed service engineer call out time. Doosan has over 550 engineers on the road at any one time, enabling the company to issue a guarantee that an engineer will be on-site within four hours.

Fast and easy access to parts is a fundamental support function – waiting for parts to arrive from a distant European parts store can cause delay and increase downtime. Doosan’s UK Parts Distribution Centre carries more than £1 million worth of stock for next- day delivery. With a 4.30 pm cut-off for orders – one of the latest in the industry – Doosan customers get the best possible support, all from within the UK.

A further enhancement to Doosan’s service support operation is the company’s Fleet Management System, which enables customers to access up-to-the-moment information on their equipment fleet, log breakdowns on a 24/7 basis and access maintenance records, account details and other vital information. Importantly, live data is fed through the engineer’s tablet making site visits simpler, with all maintenance records updated in real- time. BMJ
