new relationships and now the showroom is back up and running, we’ve been able to start to regain our individual customers. We now have an extra string to our bow.”
There was also another area of the business that could be looked at, Nicholls says: “I decided to scrutinise all of the overheads, knowing that our sales would be impacted and the margins might suffer as a consequence. It’s surprising how many savings could be made on services such as electricity, gas, maintenance, and general annual fees etc, when you really concentrate on them.”
“We are proud to say that we didn’t lose any members of staff during this difficult period. Now, of course the showroom, is even more beautiful and we have around 10,000sqft of displays after remodelling certain areas that were damaged by damp and fire, and we have achieved extra displays and now have nearly 100 room sets and displays.” As an avid motor-racing driver, Nicholls is no stranger to the aftermath of physical destruction. When a car is badly damaged in a race, the team behind it have to go back to the drawing-board to see what can be saved and what can be re-thought.
“We looked at different manufacturers as well as customers and this is where being a member of NBG came in very handy. Going out and

finding new contacts in the industry can seem quite daunting at first but the contacts and offers gained through NBG make it a much smoother process.”
“From day one, when I joined the NBG, I realised it was something I should have done ten years earlier. It’s been such a benefit to the business, and NBG have supported me by understanding that when this happened my priorities had to change and that I would have to concentrate on the rebuild.”
WHABS is now in a period of consolidation, Nicholls says, “And after over two years of disruption, now is the time to sit back and assess where we go from here. We’ll see what works and what doesn’t work, we will keep looking at our marketing and social media campaigns strategy and hopefully make people aware that we are still here and we have even more to offer.”
“The fire was a kick in the proverbials but you can either just fold under the pressure or you get off your backside and deal with it. I chose the latter.”
