SMALL DOMESTIC APPLIANCES
Cutting the costs According to Lakeland’s Trend Report 2022, the average annual electricity and gas bill has gone from £1,223 last summer, to £2,100 this summer and will reach £2,500 by this winter. Based on the 3,000 participants surveyed in the report, the majority of consumers are already taking direct action – with 89% saying they have taken measures in an attempt to save energy. When asked if they planned to try to save energy over the next 12 months, the figure rises to 92%. The rising cost of living has led to a shift
in consumer buying habits as Kelly Whitwick, the head of retail insights at GfK, a market research firm, says “Despite such a mild autumn, buyers are already investing heavily in products to help through what is expected to be an incredibly challenging winter. In the coming months we expect to see consumers spend more conservatively and focus on items that enable them to save as much money as they can.” As a result, consumers are opting for alternative cooking methods. With the rising cost of living, we have witnessed an increase in the demand for cost-saving appliances like air fryers and slow cookers. While the air fryer was first introduced in 2010, its surge in popularity was truly evident this year. From February to August 2022, kitchenware retailer Lakeland reported an increase of 636% in purchases of its Lakeland digital compact air fryer. In addition, British supermarket chain, Asda found its sales of air fryers had increased 320% increase on year. According to price comparison website, PriceRunner, the top-selling air fryers have risen in popularity by more than 3,000% since this time last year and are up 2,000% since the
summer. Air fryers use hot air as opposed to oil meaning they’re a healthier alternative and they cook food quickly and evenly. However, the main selling point is the cost. Research by electricity and gas supplier, Utilita found that air fryers run at an average cost of £55.71 a year, while an electric cooker runs at £335.57 a year. Another study by Hometree in September found that while an oven with an average wattage of 3kW costs about 34p to run for 20 minutes, a 1kW air fryer would cost 10p. Although they have not instantly risen to popularity like air fryers, slow cookers have gradually become the go-to for consumers when looking for cost-effective appliances. According to research published as part of a new campaign with British supermarket chain Iceland, slow cookers cost 16p a day – £59 annually – to run. This makes them one of the most energy-efficient alternatives on the market. Inflation and the rising cost of living are impacting consumer spending considerably and this will continue as we head into the new year. For this reason, consumers will continue to opt for cost- efficient appliances.
