Eliminating the idea of waste “

Julien Tremblin, general manager at TerraCycle Europe, talks about the company’s innovative sustainability solutions and recycling programmes open to retailers.

Our mission is to eliminate the idea of waste,” says Julien Tremblin, general manager at TerraCycle Europe.

Founded in 2001 and launched in the UK in

2009, TerraCycle is an international leader in innovative sustainability solutions, creating and operating first-of-their-kind platforms in recycling. “TerraCycle treats single-use plastics as a resource, rather than something to be thrown into landfill or incinerated at the end of its life. We do this by offering recycling solutions for what we call ‘hard-to-recycle’ waste, so this would be anything that cannot be accepted by the local council,” Tremblin says. TerraCycle offers two main platforms for recycling hard-to-recycle items.

TerraCycle’s Free Recycling Programmes TerraCycle partners with a variety of brands in the UK including Cathedral City, pladis, Nestle and most recently Sistema to launch free recycling programmes. The programmes are available to individuals, organisations and businesses to sign up to and collect and recycle waste on behalf of their communities. Retailers can join one or more of these programmes and host a drop-off location for staff and customers to bring a range of products or packaging in for recycling – for example cheese packaging, biscuit wrappers, confectionery packets, food containers and more.

“The most effective way to participate in

a free programme is to sign up as a public collector. This means your location appears on the interactive map on the TerraCycle website, and the community can find your location and drop off their hard-to-recycle

items for recycling. Not only does this mean the programmes reach as many people as possible but it also boosts customer engagement. For each item of waste sent to TerraCycle, programme members are rewarded with a monetary donation to the charity, school or non-profit organisation of their choice,” says Tremblin.

Zero Waste Box platform For any waste TerraCycle does not have a brand-sponsored free programme for, the business offers consumers a number of solutions in the form of its Zero Waste Box platform.

“How it works is simple. In the case of our Plastic Packaging Zero Waste Box, for example, the cost to the consumer includes the delivery of the solution, the shipping cost back to TerraCycle, and the recycling cost of the full box of the accepted waste stream. Simply choose the box size required and fill it with the products and packaging you can’t recycle with your local council such as flexible plastic packaging, shopping bags, food containers etc. Once full, take the box to any UPS location or schedule a collection to send your items back to TerraCycle using the pre-paid UPS shipping label already affixed to the box. When TerraCycle receives the box, we recycle all of the collected materials, saving them from landfill and incineration,” Tremblin says.

uwww.rayware.co.uk To continue its sustainable efforts,

TerraCycle regularly launches new programmes with brand partners. It most recently launched the Sistema Food Storage Container and Reusable Bottle Free Recycling Programme to recycle any brand of reusable food storage container or plastic drinks bottle. Other launches include the Murad Free Recycling Programme, the Baylis & Harding Free Recycling Programme, the Cathedral City Cheese Packaging Free Recycling Programme and the Hasbro Toy and Games Free Recycling Programme.

“Retailers should be mindful of the

products they stock and lean towards those that incorporate the most easily and widely recyclable materials available. The more complex the mix of materials, the harder it is to collect, separate and recycle. And the more room for consumer confusion as to the elements which can and can’t be recycled. Breaking the ‘business as usual’ design and disposability model in the industry is crucial. “We are always on the lookout for more

partners to work with and new waste streams to tackle. If any readers are looking for a solution for a specific type of waste then please don’t hesitate to get in touch,” Tremblin adds.
