• JWP’s LocknLock storageware, Global’s anniversary knives, Silverwood bakeware, Bennett’s Krisk bean slicers, Typhoon Retro scales and Emma Bridgewater’s Polka Dot butter dishes were the best-selling housewares products at Barclay Ross in Angus, Dinghams Cookshop (Salisbury), Old Bakery Cookshop (Aberystwyth), The Orange Tree Cookshop (Herne Bay), Pot Stop (Hebden Bridge) and The Works (Haywards Heath) respectively.
• Supermarket chain Waitrose was planning to expand its Food & Home format: a hybrid selling a selection of Waitrose food alongside non-food lines from sister department store group John Lewis, with homeware taking up around a third of sales space.
• Internet shopping overtook mail order catalogues in the UK in 2004 as the most popular form of home shopping for the first time ever, according to market research company Mintel.
• Abraxas Cookshop announced plans to open a branch at Banbury in Oxfordshire in June.
• Housewares, hardware and garden chain Wilkinson (now Wilko) opened its 251st high street store in Brighouse in West Yorkshire, following three branch openings a month earlier at South Driffield in East Yorkshire, Dereham in Norfolk and Erith in Kent.
• A report from market research company Mintel said Britain’s kitchens were crammed with healthier cooking appliances. The introduction of new products such as healthy grills, as well as the continued development of bread makers and steamers, had helped to boost overall growth rates.
