10 years ago this month in Housewares Magazine…

• Eddingtons’ Poach Perfect silicone egg poachers and KitchenCraft’s Gas Ring Reducers were the best-selling housewares products at Tewkesbury Cookshop in Gloucestershire and Houseproud of Morningside in Edinburgh respectively.

• Five retailers including the UK’s Steamer Trading were honoured as 20009-2010 Global gia winners at the International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago for excellence in home and housewares retailing. The other winners were Ambiente Gourmet (Columbia), I Love My House Barazzoni (Italy), Galeria Kaufhof (Germany) and Stark & Whyte (Canada).

• The Conran Shop opened a pop-up shop in Westfield London shopping centre to showcase the retailer’s ‘Well Considered’ range, aimed at the younger generation. Launched by design guru and The Conran Shop founder Sir Terence Conran, the 900sq ft outlet was targeted at ‘customers looking for their first experience of The Conran Shop’.

• Grocery chain Waitrose announced details of a tie-up with best-selling cookery writer Delia Smith and Michelin-starred chef Heston Blumenthal. Billed as ‘a dream alliance that is set to be the envy of the food retail world’, the culinary duo were appointed food ambassadors for the Waitrose brand, making their joint debut in Waitrose’s first-ever personality fronted TV advertising campaign.

• Lakeland expanded abroad with the launch of its first store outside the UK. The housewares chain opened a 5,000sq ft outlet in the Mirdif City Centre shopping mall in Dubai. With a shopfit similar to Lakeland’s Durham store, the Middle East shop offered a ‘very similar’ range to UK branches, with most of the UK lines of kitchenware, home storage and cleaning solutions on sale.
