Record attendance at Ambiente
Billed as the world’s leading trade fair for consumer goods, German show Ambiente was fully booked – and welcomed an unprecedented number of international visitors from 168 countries
A
record number of visitors travelled to German trade show Ambiente in February.
In total, 134,600 buyers from 168 countries
attended the five-day exhibition at Frankfurt am Main, which ended on February 13. The top ten visitor nations after Germany
were Italy, China, France, USA, UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, Korea and Switzerland. Above-average growth in visitors’ numbers was recorded from China, Korea, Russia, the North African countries, South Africa, all of South America, Turkey, Lebanon and Cyprus. They checked out the wares of 4,441
exhibitors from 89 countries, in a space equivalent to the size of 43 football fields (308,000sq m gross) across three segments: Living, Giving and Dining. Some 81% of all exhibitors came from
outside Germany, making Ambiente ‘the most international consumer goods trade fair of all time’, according to organiser Messe Frankfurt. The show’s annual ‘partner country’
presentation was given by the Netherlands. A special presentation entitled ‘DO DUTCH’, created by renowned Amsterdam-based industrial designer Robert Bronwasser, was on display in Galleria 1. He staged an elaborate display, highlighting
the country’s design expertise by ‘placing consumer goods from the Netherlands in a new and unusual context, presenting them in a way that was minimalistic yet colourful’. Another Dutch VIP guest at Ambiente was
TV personality, presenter, model and entrepreneur Sylvie Meis, who is very popular in Germany. She was taken on a tour around the halls of the exhibition, with the focus on home accessories from the Netherlands and Germany. An additional feature for Ambiente 2018 was
a Business Matchmaking Service tool, to help visitors or exhibitors find suitable contacts; and the ‘Ethical Style Guide’ booklet, which drew attention to manufacturers of sustainable and ethically-manufactured consumer goods. Meanwhile, the needs of hotels, restaurants and cruise liners for robust yet high-quality design elements and dining facilities was mapped by two subject areas: HoReCa and Contract Business. During the show, Messe
Frankfurt named India as the partner country for Ambiente 2019. The partner country globe is always handed over at a ceremony in honour of the current partner country. The country that receives the globe can then present itself at a special feature at the next Ambiente. Detlef Braun, member of the
executive board of Messe Frankfurt, said: “After Japan, India is now Ambiente’s second Asian partner country. With its population of over 1.3 billion, India has an incomparable

diversity, a rich culture and a tradition of art and craft. It’s also among our absolute top countries in terms of exhibitors. I’m confident that its partner country presentation will be a real highlight at Ambiente 2019.” This is the eighth time that the partner
country globe has been handed to another country at Ambiente. After Denmark, France, Japan, USA, Italy, UK and the Netherlands, India will be the focus at the next Ambiente, which will be held from February 8 to February 12 at Messe Frankfurt.
