The Awards2018: winners’ gallery

The Kitchen Hero Awardsponsored by Home Hardware WINNER Alastair Fisher

T

he most sought-aſter accolade in the Housewares Innovation Awards programme is The Kitchen Hero prize.

This honour can be presented to a brand that has performed

remarkably well over the past 12 months in terms of sales and consumer recognition – or an exceptional individual, company or product. The winner was announced by Nicholas Pedlar, director of sponsor

Home Hardware. He said: “This year’s winner is someone who has been key to his very successful company since he joined it in the 1980s - a company whose heritage stretches back to the early 1800s. “In his role as joint managing and sales director, he saw the benefits

of exporting very early. The company exhibited in the new Housewares Section when it was added to the Ambiente show in 1990, which until then had been a gift fair. “He has given a great deal back to the housewares industry and in

the 1990s he became an important member of the board of BHHMA (British Hardware and Housewares Manufacturers’ Association) [now known as BHETA (British Home Enhancement Trade Association)]. He was asked to be president of the BHHMA in 1997 and held this post for two years. “Over the years, his enthusiasm has led his company to improve

and add to its manufactured products with other ranges that it exclusively distributes in the UK. “Under his management, the company is currently relocating to a £2.5 million modern facility on the outskirts of Sheffield city centre,

where it will be able to operate far more efficiently. “Although much of the production has been moved offshore, it is

still manufacturing in Sheffield - generating employment, creating wealth for the city and keeping Sheffield’s steel heritage alive. “In recognition of over 30 years’ service, dedication and inspiration

to both Taylor’s Eye Witness and the housewares industry in general, the winner of this prestigious category for 2018 is Alistair Fisher.”

The Rainy Day Trust Philanthropist Award WINNERDavid Hibbert and his staff at Stax Trade Centres

D

uring the ceremony, the chairman of industry charity the Rainy Day Trust Neville Singer gave a brief speech to guests.

In his presentation, he explained the role of the Rainy Day Trust,

which is the only charity which exists solely to help people in the UK’s home improvement and enhancement industry. “No longer do we just give financial assistance,” he said. “We offer a

full range of services to tackle many different problems that your people may face, from debt and housing issues to counselling and help getting through a tough winter. There is a world of expertise on tap to take away the strain, offer advice and guidance, or simply provide a financial boost to get you, your staff and dependants through a tough time. “This year, the charity is commemorating its 175th anniversary and

we want you to be part of our celebrations. We are planning a series of events that anyone can join in with and we are asking for 175 people to raise £175 each through sponsored events - and we’d love it if you can help us. “Throughout our history there have been a few individuals and

organisations that have provided an exceptional level of support to us. In our anniversary year, we would like to shine the spotlight on one of these amazing philanthropists.” Neville then invited Ken Hom OBE on stage to present the

inaugural Rainy Day Trust Philanthropist Award. The internationally acclaimed chef said: “This award goes to a man who became involved
