talking trends ‘For us, innovation is key’

From eco-friendly to hydration, Ultimate Products housewares senior buyer Katie Maxwell shares her insight into housewares trends

consumers recognising their individual accountability for the impact that products they use have on the environment. This trend is led by the reusability of a product

and reducing waste within the environment. As a result of this, the ‘hydration’ trend is showing no sign of slowing down. The coffee on-the-go and hydration trend is here to stay, so keep your eyes peeled for our newest collections coming soon. My biggest piece of advice for retailers on how to

support sales would be: don’t play it safe and don’t be afraid to give something new a try. Customers like to see newness; it gives them a reason to shop your aisles.

“ Customers like to F

or us, innovation is key - and is a crucial factor to winning in the homewares category. It’s at the forefront of our minds

when developing product for our brands. Customers love nothing more than finding a new gadget to use in their kitchens. Evidence of this has been shown over the last few years with huge trends in spiralising vegetables, avocado tools, mini choppers and so on - all of which play a key role in creating delicious and healthy meals within the kitchen. We were able to share the success of these items with our retail partners. The pressure is now on for me to deliver the next new and exciting product for 2019/2020, so watch this space! Demand is definitely there for good quality

products at affordable prices with a branded offering. The quality of a product is becoming the biggest factor in the decision-making process of a consumer when purchasing a product. Innovation within cookware is key, with the need

for functional, durable, hard-wearing and long- lasting cookware. Consumers want it to withstand the test of time alongside the ease of cooking. The need for eco-friendly based products is

playing a major role within the market. This is a trend that isn’t going away, with more and more

see newness; it gives them a reason to shop your aisles ”

With the power of the internet nowadays , quality, value and uniqueness is crucial because the consumer is far from loyal: product is so easily accessible and delivered to your doorstep with the click of a button. The need to differentiate your offering from your competitor or choose a product with a point of difference is key in attracting consumers to come and purchase from you. So, what’s the Next Big Thing for 2019? I don’t think there is one ‘Big Thing’ as I believe there will be multiple trends that will influence the UK housewares market such as storage, eco-friendly, hydration, ease of cooking… I could go on. My main objective is for the brands here at

Ultimate Products - Salter, Russell Hobbs and Progress - to be interesting and loved by all consumers, in the hope that they come back and buy more! For us it’s about our brands. British brands are

Salter Gold collection

becoming increasingly more in demand in light of Brexit and, as a nation, we’re becoming much more patriotic - which has strengthened the sales of our brands. I’m fortunate enough to be working with Salter, Russell Hobbs and Progress, which are all British brands that have stood the test of time and, alongside this, are trusted within the nation’s homes.
