• Ikea gained planning permission for its largest store to date in the UK: a 300,000sq ft outlet in Edmonton, north London.
• Rayware acquired the Arthur Wood name, designs, brands and all remaining stock.
• Housewares Magazine’s ‘Mystery Shopper’ travelled to Los Angeles and declared Sur La Table as the winner of a survey of the California city’s housewares retailers. Described as ‘every cook’s dream’, the shop beat Macy’s; Crate & Barrel; Bed, Bath & Beyond; and Williams-Sonoma.
• Celebrity cook Nigella Lawson was among the culinary stars scheduled to hold demonstrations at the Gourmet Products Show in San Francisco in May.
• Tefal launched a TV and press advertising campaign to support its Jamie Oliver Professional cookware series, with a first half year spend of £1.5 million
• Clements department store in Watford closed its doors after 106 years of trading in the Hertfordshire town.
• Tynwald Mills department store on the Isle of Man had just opened a 7,000sq ft Room & Garden store.
• Typhoon 12in wok, Carl Kammerling Intl waiter’s friend corkscrew/bottle opener, Candlelight Products’ New England tableware, KitchenCraft Le Parfait preserving jars, Swarton Gift Sales cut crystal and Horwood Stellar Hard Anodised cookware were the bestselling selling products at Armstrong & Pybus (Kirkby Lonsdale), Arthur Fordham & Co (Lyme Regis), EJ Cassells (Ballymoney), Leigh & Sons (Witney), The Cookshop (Peebles) and Upstairs Downstairs (Oswestry) respectively.
