eliveroo has begun delivering Sainsbury’s food for the first time as the supermarket chain seeks to capitalise on the rapid growth of Britain’s appetite for takeaways.

The pizza delivery service has been launched across four cities, making Sainsbury’s the first UK supermarket to offer hot takeaway food through Deliveroo’s app.
During the two-month trial, Sainsbury’s pizza counters will open between midday until 10pm from Monday to Saturday and from 11am until normal store closing times on Sundays.
Pizzas will be cooked to order and cost the same as they do in-store, with the addition of Deliveroo’s service charge which is typically £2.50 per order.
The fast-growing delivery app, which primarily fulfils orders for restaurants, already offers cold food and drink deliveries from Co-Op stores in some locations and smaller convenience stores.
With Deliveroo’s latest service, customers within range of Sainsbury’s stores in Cambridge, Selly Oak in Birmingham, Hove in Sussex, and Pimlico and Hornsey in London, can order pizza to their door.
Supermarkets are looking to take a slice of the UK’s £8.1bn food delivery market which grew 13.4% between 2017 and 2018.

&M may be rolling out its frozen and chilled range to a wider selection of stores. B&M will open its new multi- temperature distribution centre in Bedford in September.
This is a soft opening with the warehouse becoming fully operational in January 2020.
The retailer has previously said that chilled and frozen ranges could be rolled out to all B&M stores once this centre is operational, depending on individual category performance.

esco has announced 4500 jobs cuts as it seeks to simplify operations at its Metro stores. While most of the jobs in the firing line will be cut from 153 mid-size Tesco Metro stores, the latest round of redundancies will also target jobs at smaller Tesco Express stores and the larger superstores.
The grocery giant said the latest job cuts are part of a continuing review of how its stores are operated amid an “increasingly competitive and challenging retail environment”.
Faster and simpler ways of filling the Metro shelves was one of the operational changes in the pipeline, with more products going directly to the shop floor and fewer being held in the back rooms.
This means staff will need to be more flexible, working across different departments and adding more focus on keeping stock levels high during busy periods of the day.

cado plans to open a new customer service hub in Sunderland, which will create 300 new jobs and prepare the retailer for the M&S tie-up.
The online retailer has agreed to a 15-year lease for the top two floors of The Beam, a newly-renovated building based in the centre of Sunderland.
The Metro format was originally designed for larger, weekly shops, but Tesco said that nearly 70% of customers now use them as convenience stores, buying food for that day rather than buying bigger baskets.
Ocado said it would open job applications by the end of this year. The Sunderland site will be the online grocer’s second customer service centre as it prepares for its joint venture with Marks & Spencer. The 300 new roles at the site are expected to “provide key customer service support” for the joint venture. Ocado customer service general manager, Ian Pattle, said: “We’re pleased to be coming to Sunderland as we grow our market-leading customer service proposition. “The new contact centre will support our existing service and we look forward to welcoming new talent from the local area to our team.” Sunderland City Council leader Graeme Miller, said: “Ocado’s decision to invest in The Beam is absolutely fantastic news not only for Sunderland but for the entire
Northeast region. We couldn’t be happier that we’ve attracted such an exceptional brand to our city centre and we look forward to supporting them as they build a team and grow from here.”

aitrose has sold four stores, and is closing a further three as it focuses
on long-term profitability.
Waitrose has sold its Bromley, Oadby and Wollaton stores to Lidl, and has also sold its Sandhurst store to an unnamed retailer. Stores in Marlow, Stevenage Waterside (British Airways Headquarters) will also close. The 677 partners impacted by the closures are currently in consultation. Waitrose & Partners director of shop trade, Mark Gifford, said: “We’re making good progress and Waitrose & Partners is on track for profit growth this year but, despite the best efforts of everyone involved, we haven’t been able to find a way to make these shops profitable in the long term.”
At the end of the last financial year Waitrose reported progress on profits, growing operating profit by 18.1% to £203.2m, as it focused on improving gross margins.
