BPMA’s CE marking guidance is a hit

T

he first ‘CE Marking Guidance Course’, staged by the British Pump Manufacturing Association (BPMA)

on 16 July 2019, has been heralded a great success by all those who attended – members and non-members alike. Gary Wilde, technical services officer at the

BPMA. Non-compliant pumping equipment

remains a major problem in the UK market, where CE marking is compulsory. All companies that build pumping equipment, such as booster sets, pressurisation units, rainwater harvesting tanks, sewage stations or bespoke equipment and who sell products in the UK or to the European market must be able to demonstrate that the products meet applicable EU requirements, are correctly CE marked and are placed on the market with the correct Declaration of Conformity. Concerned that many companies still do

not meet these obligations under current legislation, the BPMA specifically developed this training course to help address what is a key issue. It provides the information and skills required to understand Self Certification CE Marking Essentials and enable compliance with a range of Directives, Regulations and EN Standards. It also covers other related product certification and documentation issues. Gary Wilde, technical services officer at the BPMA, and course leader, commented: “It is

so important that companies understand that in order to place their products correctly on the market they need to look at what they do and the guidelines that are there to help them. It was therefore really pleasing to see so many companies represented on the course, especially from within the UK set-building community.” Indeed, such was the interest in this initial

guidance session, with all 30 places being quickly taken, that a second session has now been scheduled for 01 October. It will again take place at the BPMA Offices in West Bromwich.

SBS is going green S

mith Brothers Stores (SBS) has developed more green initiatives to help reduce wastage and greenhouse gases within the company, including the purchase of hybrid cars and new packaging tape which can reduce plastic by up to 30%.

The SBS fleet is continually

focused on reducing its CO2 emissions. Since the passing of the zero carbon emissions by 2050 law, set by the Prime Minister, the company thought it was more important than ever to start putting

schemes in place across the 15- depot network to help reach this goal.

Throughout the company SBS has actioned schemes, like the use of hybrid cars. Hybrid cars produce significantly lower average emissions from the traditional petrol and diesel cars, so SBS has started to invest in hybrid vehicles. The chief executive of the business led the way by driving hybrids, setting the standards from the top. Smith Brothers’ most recent relocated branch has built six EV

amsung and Cars Refrigeration, a leading supplier of refrigeration components, tools and equipment have announced a distribution

agreement, effective immediately. Cars Refrigeration will have the ability to sell

Samsung air conditioning and climate control solutions products. Complimenting their existing range of more than 4,000 refrigeration components. Qamar Khan, key account manager at Samsung Climate Solutions, commented: “We approached Cars Refrigeration to become a distributor for us as they have a strong presence and client base in the industry. What’s more, the technical support and expertise Cars Refrigeration provide their customers is exemplary. Chloe Robbins, marketing and business development director for Cars Refrigeration, said: “We are excited to see the partnership grow. Samsung is a global credible brand renowned for their high quality and innovative products. “We are proud to be working with them as a distributor, their product range enhances our offer perfectly allowing us to provide a better solution for our customers.” Cars Refrigeration is embarking on an exciting period of growth, with a clear plan to add additional products and solutions to its portfolio. The addition of the Samsung range is hoped to increase in turnover by at least 10%.

charging points at the branch. This happened to be the biggest single installation within the area (to date) and will help to service the fleet of hybrids.

SBS is always looking at ways to reduce waste and the new tape helps reduce plastic and CO2 emissions while still giving optimal performance. Similarly, where possible SBS will reduce waste by offering paperless (electronic) deliveries. Smith Brothers has also introduced a cycle scheme which allows staff to purchase bikes and encourages them to pursue healthier lifestyles while reducing carbon emissions.

At present just 43% of the 13bn plastic bottles sold each year in the UK are recycled, and 700,000 become litter each day. The company now has SBS water bottles available at its London branches to assist in preventing that number from growing further. With its fleet of vehicles SBS is continually focused on reducing its CO2

emissions, making sure vehicles conform to the ‘low emission zones’ which started operation in 2008, administered by the Transport for London. Using the latest guidelines it ensures its fleet meet Euro 6 standards, providing SBS with a Silver FORS accreditation.
